Default Intake Questions

I'm new to the concept of using aftermarket CAIs, and I have a few questions.
I have a 2005 Daytona Edition

1) I've read that Volant is the best brand to go with, is that the general consensus?

2) This is going to sound dumb, but if I want to to install an Air Intake Scoop, can I just hook it up to the factory set up?

3) All the product descriptions say that it will add 15-20 HP. How true is that?

No, doing the Scoop is not the same as the RAM AIR hood...the scoop is just for looks, and does not actually allow air to travel to the intake...and 15-20 sounds high, i would say 8-12...and there are so many intakes out there that claim that, but I have heard of the BFI intake that is supposed to be better than the AEM and the K&N systems....heres a link to the BFIhttp://airflowinnovationscorp.com/intakes/bfi.html

I wouldn't say that the Volant is the best . I'm running the K&N fipk kit and quite happy with it . Other people have made their own and say that their amazed at the difference . As long as the air intake is free of any obstructions and no restiction ,you're doing what is needed . The motor is only capable of sucking enough air that it can . It's all in what catches your eye and now much money you have or want to spend . Tom P.S. Don't forget to go to the newbie section and get your official greeting . Talk to ya soon . Tom

No , theres guys on here that have the Volant and swear by them . It's just whats your preference and what you can afford . Theres guys on here that have made their own cai and swear by them also . http://www.ramforumz.com/showthread.php?t=41675 . They can't believe the difference it made . I don't think down the road they would spend the couple hundred dollars to buy one when they know they can make their own for pennys on the dollar . Hope that helped you out . Any more questions feel free to ask or PM me . Talk to ya soon . Tom

Tom's on the level with both the HPs and what the CAI does, regardless of brand. A hood scoop brings air into the engine bay and does help a bit with cooling the engine down but does nothing for air intake. For that you need a ram air hood which directs the air into the stock air box area. They work with CAIs but may need some mods to get a proper seal.

As for brands of CAIs, it's all up to you. I run an AirAid w/ ram air hood, but many go with the K&N or BFI. The volants are excellent boxes, but is the hex-core gonna make that big a difference? maybe 1-2HP if it's absolutely clean over others. Also, don't go by manufacturer HP specs, it's never right. They use max numbers from their best resulting vehicle. If you want the Volant and it's the one that catches you the most, go for it.

The BFI sounds great and performs. The key to performance is velocity, and the BFI is a 6" base filter that gradually funnels into the Throttle Body, increasing velocity. The Volant pulls air from a colder source, but that is only when you are idling for an extended period of time. When your vehicle is moving, the air entering the engine bay so fast (i.e. the BFI) that it is just as cool as any of the air entering the Volant unit, but the velocity is much faster; the Volant is sucking air through the smaller tube, as in it is restricting the amount of air coming into the engine.
