Hey guys!
Well I was never in the US Forces but served in a european country. Worked 24/7 with us forces, was very nice
Well and now I am living in Florida getting married to my wonderful fiancé I´m already thinking of joining the army but it is kinda hart as green card holder to get a job which is related to my degree because I am not US citizen yet.

Pardon my ignorance but I'm non-military and I have a military question. The wife and I were watching "Full Metal Jacket" last night and when one of the squads was in the field, a soldier took his magazine and tapped it on his helmet before loading it in to his rifle. Exactly what does that do or supposed to do? I have a pretty good idea but I just wanted to confirm but before I believe in something wrong.

That habit started in VietNam in the mid 60's when the first M16s came out. Due to a problem with our ammo matching up to the new rifle, there were a lot of jams especially in damp, muddy, atmospheres. Tapping the magazine was to seat all the rounds back against the rear of the magazine, trying to insure a better ammo feed. Back then everyone used full auto and there were a lot of jam ups. This is what I would say is the reason. To seat the ammo in the mag. Today it is probably unecessary, but old habits die hard I guess.

Lubinator is almost exactly right. Except for the part with it not serving much purpose with today's weapons...you can still have a mis-feed on an M16/M4 Carbine if you dont tap your mag on your helmet. It makes it more likely. All it does is like he said, slides the rounds flush against the back of the magazine for proper feed.
