Default 2nd gerneration towing

I am looking into buying a 2nd gen 1500 and have a couple questions.

I plan on towing about 5 times a year and towing around 6k (trailer and vehicle). Online i found some sketchy references that the stick has a lower tow rating than the auto.

Does anyone know the tow rating of a stick vs auto? The stick only comes in the 5.2 so I am thinking I am stuck with an auto 5.9 if I plan on towing that much with the 2nd gen.

Thanks

I don't know if there's a ratio difference or not, but if you're gonna be towing then you'd want to get the 5.9L. Had one in a '98 2500 and it never had any troubles hauling with the auto tranny. The 360s put out a lot of torque which is why they didn't have that impressive HP numbers.

my camper is 6250 GVWR and I'm sure about 7500 when loaded down with water and accessories. I just went camping and also had the truck full of wood.

The truck did pretty good but certainly didn't like any type of hill at all and topped out at about 65. Luckily this year I'll only tow 2 - 3 times and will all be local.

The truck is a 99 with the 5.9L, auto, 4 x 4, 3.55 gears. I definately want more power and will probably do like air intake, headers and exhaust over the winter.

I'll do some searches for other people who have done similar mods, hopefully i'll see some decent results and prices.

If anyone has suggestions I am certainly open to them.

Default Impressive torque? Seriously?

There's a big difference in torque output between 4:10 and 3:55 gearing especially with oversize tires.

My ram would probably pull 7700 lbs as well...but from a dead stop it would accelerate like an anemic snail and I'd have to run with the OD off.
This also allows me to watch my gas guage drop like a stone. And plays havoc with my heartbeat anytime I glance at the tranny temp guage.
The comment that the 5.9 gasser makes impressive torque made me snark my coffee. Not for a truck the size of a Ram.
My feeling is that if you live in a flat area, are only towing a few times a year, can afford the gas, and have a decent or properly modded tranny (forget the bolt on engine mods not enough bang for the buck), you can do this with your ram. Also don't run anything above a 265 tire with your 3:55 gears.
EDIT: If you are going to do any engine mods, buy a tuner like the SCT or a P&G reflash for your ECM. It will remove the torque management and give you some more ooomph. Downside: premium gas.

I tow a 6500lb dry weight travel trailer.I have a 01 off road version with 5.9.Automatic.It has the 4.10 gears. I have pulled it several miles with no problems. Get the 5.9. If you havent bought one yet try and find the off road version. DO NOT TOW IN O.D. My dad towed with a v-10 and it done really well.
