don't go knocking the chevy 5.7 though. that's a tough motor in anything around '05. i towed a wrangler from central NH to plymouth Ma with my step father's 05 5.7 1500 on a 2,000lb trailer. the wrangler has to weigh about 4,000 so around 6,000 total and it was like it wasn't back there at all.
now i kow my 8.0L has alot more Ooomph than his 5.7 but it was still impressive uphill and on the flat including right through rush hour in Boston. I haven't driven the Ram with a 5.9L but if it's stronger than the Chevy 5.7 than i would say it's more than capable, plus with a regear on the front and rear, you would be amazed at tourque increase.

^^^you must be thinking of the 5.3L in the chevy. the last year they put the 5.7L in their 1500 trucks was 1998. in 99 they went to the 5.3. chevys are low on power, their wonderful independant front suspension is great...for eating cv axles, and take a football field to turn in. lets not even get started on ford. i say go ahead and splurge on your towing investment and buy a cummins. thats what i plan on doing...one day.

well I know everyone here is going to talk crap but I have a 97 5.2 auto and pull my 2000lb trailer behind it and load that thing with what ever car my job tells me to get. I've put everything up there from another Dodge to a Geo and the only time my truck had trouble was with that Ford F350 turbo diesel that thing weighs a lot but I still pulled it. But hey if you can afford it get the Cummings. I don't think there is anything that thing can tow. I wish I knew how to upload video. I'd put the video of my truck pulling my trailer with a 2500 ram van on top and a 63 ford F150 behind it. That would make everyone crack up...

i believe it. mines pulled a 20 foot double iron solid gate car trailer with a big kubota tractor with a bushhog on it through soft sand in 2wd with no problem. i have no problem with my 5.2 pulling...little low on street power, but the limited slip helps when towing.

The old 5.7 chevy's are good motors. My uncle has one in his 97 all stock and it will outrun my 97 360. We were on a quad riding trip had 500lbs in the bed. About 3000 between trailer and quads on it so about 3500lbs and we did 95mph on a slight uphill grade for about a mile. Now the other guy that went with us flew past us in his 2500 cummins but that's not a fair comparison plus he had a programmer,intake/exhaust and that wakes up a diesel.

You can't go wrong with a NV4500. Its what I got in my 96' 2500. Its pretty strong as I used it to do a compression start on a rig (without trailer). Nothing like having control of your tranny. Plus I got the creeper gear which makes tough situations an easy task.

5.9L Manual.

i could have sworn the 360 was listed with the nv4500, but maybe im trippin. Ive towed 4000 lb loads with my 3.9L but you can DEFINATELY feel it. My trailor wieght alone is registered at 1500 lbs so Im going to be looking into the 360 swap in the near future. the 318 really isnt all that so I'd go with the 360 if i were u, although I prefer a standard while towing.

oh yeah wish i had a diesel just for the reason that they respond so well to just simple mods. lot of potential in a diesel.
