Angry Planet Dodge

I've been having problems with the bed rail caps on my 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Crew Cab Laramie. They have been warping and popping out off the bed. When I push them down they pop up again. So I went to the dealer and spoke to the parts department. The nice parts guy helped me find the parts and ordered them for me and told me to come back next day since they were not in stock and they would be covered by warranty since it's a new truck.

Go to dealer today and talk to the service associate who seemed be having a bad day by the look on his miserable face. I explain my problem and he takes a look at my truck's license plate frame and say's "oh but dealer xyz installed these for you, that's not covered by warranty and so and so shouldn't have ordered the parts for you." Since I'm a pessimist at heart and was expecting some bull#$#, I looked at him and told him "Those bed rail caps come on all Laramies from factory, and you're going to tell me that's it's not covered???" He didn't say anything, walked back to his computer, did the paper work and told me to come back in 5 days!!!. I looked at him and told him, "the parts are here because the parts guy ordered them for me." Well he wasn't too pleased and walked away.

I didn't buy my truck from this dealer because my buddy didn't have a good experience buying his truck from them. So I went to a different county and had a great experience. So this service guy wanted me to think that I had to go back all the way to the selling dealer. What?? Does he want me to go for warranty repairs over there also? Jerk.

In the end my truck got fixed and here are some pictures to show what i'm talking about.

You should be getting a survey in the mail regarding the service you had performed. Feel free to rip into them. Chrysler takes those surveys very seriously.

That reminds me of the roof rail lifting that is so prevalent on the Nitros! Dodge knows it is an issue but I see so many dealers who won't fix them! I got mine replaced with no issues and they have been fine ever since.

Glad you got your truck fixed but sorry it had to be a hassle! I feel for you!

I don't like to get people in trouble and if I do give him a bad survey, then I might just feel guilty because that's how I am. But you know what, the parts department guy was really cool and so was the technician. It was that service advisor that was a pain in the rear. But I think I will do that survey and complement those who deserve it.

My last truck was a Ford and they pulled that crap with me too because I bought it from a different dealer. He said why don't you take it back where you got it and have them fix it. I came right back with why don't I call Ford and tell them your refusing to fix my warranty repair. It was fixed the next day lol.

I use to work for a Chevy dealer almost thirty years ago . We got a rather large amount of warranty work from other dealerships . I remember them saying that we would take care of our customers first then get to vehicles from other dealerships after that . They kinda had a good point . Don't know that being a customer from another dealer I would of been happy with that statement .

I always wondered about those surveys, filled them out and mailed them off, but was always curious if anyone ever read that stuff.

lamateo, not sure if that service person was having a bad day or was just plain lazy and didn't want to deal with you....Either way, glad you got it fixed, it looks much better!

Man I hate those caps! I've already had (1) replaced and I think it's the one that's starting to bow again!!!! I guess I'll just keep going back and having new ones put on all throughout the warranty period. Then I guess I'll get mad and epoxy them on or something!

Yeah, that was total BS. Warranty is warranty no matter what dealer sold the truck or what dealer services the warranty.

Hand him a cold Snapple on a hot day and tell him thanks for the help. Your visits will go better.

In fact, here's a tip to improve your relationship with the service department. It's called bribery :

One morning, early into their shift, take a box or two of donuts to the service department. Make sure you have enough for all the service writers and techs.

On a hot afternoon, take in a cooler full of ice cold Snapples or other non-alcoholic beverages.

They will remember that. And they will be more attentive to your needs.

One caution - don't do anything that the service writer will do without them knowing it, like ordering your own parts under a warranty claim. Let them do their jobs.

As far as the bed caps, I never liked them. They all did the same thing as yours. One of these days, do a spray lining with a "topper edge". Thats' where they line the bed and the top of the bed rails.

Looks good, won't warp, lasts forever.
