Default I love my truck!

I had an experience this morning that made me realize that in spite of all the bashing that goes on about the quality of American cars, the Dodge Ram is an amazing vehicle, especially when compared to my first pickup truck.

Let me set the stage. I live in South Florida, and work at a nuclear power plant. It's right on the edge of Biscayne Bay, and the access road to the plant is long, straight, and no other traffic on it save for employees heading to work. As you might expect, the speed limit is not frequently observed on this stretch, and yes, I'm guilty as well. This morning, I was heading to work, in 72 degree weather, with the windows down, enjoying some vintage ZZ Top (Rio Grande Mud- Just Got Paid) on a really nice audio system in my truck. Suddenly, out of nowhere, an endangered Florida Panther appeared in front of me. Not wanting to remove one of the few remaining of these magnificent beasts from the earth, I nailed the brakes, fully expecting to slide over him and make panther rash out of a beautiful cat. To my surprise and joy, the 4 wheel disk brakes and ABS combined to rapidly slow my speed, allowing me to snap the truck into the oncoming traffic lane, avoid the panther, and not end up in the irrigation canal that parallels this road. All the while, Dusty Hill kept on singing. I continued on to work, with a big-assed grin on my face, knowing that I had saved one of nature's true wonders.

This made me ponder the advances over my first truck, a 1972 Chevy Custom 10 stepside with a 350V8 and TH350 auto. Drum brakes rear, disc brakes front. Don't get me wrong, it was a nice truck for it's time, but if I had been in that, one of two things would have happened: 1. The panther would be road kill now, or 2. I would be upside down in a canal trying to swim faster than the gator who hangs out there. At the same time, I get to enjoy phenomenal comfort, listen to awesome tunes, and get 15-7 miles per gallon.

For me, it really puts today's trucks in perspective. Trucks are light years ahead of those made before them. The best part of it is this: We're all Dodge fans here, but it really doesn't matter what you choose: Dodge, GM, Ford, Toyota, Nissan: they're all reliable, efficient, comfortable and continually getting better.

For me, this is a great time to live and be a truck owner!

Thanks for letting me ramble. Just my .02...

Awesome story! I have had to use my brakes heavy a few times and felt all the systems kick in, great feeling to know they work!

Get any pictures of the panther??

Sorry, I was more concerned with staying away from the gator than snapping a picture of the panther!

Wow , the wild life you have roaming around . I quess it wouldn't be a good thing if you broke down on that road . Better have a cell phone and call for help . Wouldn't catch me outside my truck .

Well, if you like those, you'll be totally fascinated with the Burmese Pythons, African Rock Pythons, Monitor Lizards, Iguanas, and all other manners of exotic reptiles that roam free around SFLA. Folks bring them here as pets and release them into the Everglades when they get too big too handle. I've seen iguanas as large as 6 feet including tail wandering around the banks of the canals here.

No question about it, if the truck breaks down on the road to and from the plant at night, I'm calling for help or spending the night in the truck!

Thank god from modern technology. Glad to hear you were able to get out of the situation with no troubles except possibly a need for a calm down from the adrenalin high.

Very cool, those are some magnifacent animals, we have a Panther breed that lives around here, very very rare, I have seen 3 in my life and unfortunately one was road kill along I-95, I stopped and checked it out and they have very faint spots almost like a leapord, I started to pick it up but the laws on endangered species are very strict,
alot of people around here say they dont exist but I know better I reckon some folks aint intune with nature like the rest of us...
Great job missing it, that may be the one that save the species...

I despise killing animals unnecessarily. Don't get me wrong, I hunt (just not lately), but I see no reason to splatter an animal all over the highway, especially when it's us who have encroached on their natural territory.

There is a lot to dislike about South Florida. Rude drivers, crime, high taxes, the housing market collapse, etc... But at the same time, there is an AWFUL lot to appreciate down here. The wildlife is just breathtaking. I can sit on my back porch and see all manners of waterfowl (there is a small pond behind my house), it's a 5 mile drive to Everglades National Park, or 3 to Biscayne National Park, and 18 miles and I'm in the upper Keys. All in all, it's a great place to live.

I know damn well there are panthers in your area. I live in SFLA, but my home is Goose Creek. I really miss South Carolina.

Good story though.
