Default Bad transmission

Hello. I have a 1990 Dodge Ramcharger, 2WD, 5.2L FI, AT, 9.25 rear axle. The truck has always made a clunking sound when put into gear and while moving makes a high pitched whining sound. I recently had the transmission serviced and was told that metal shavings were found in the trans oil pan and was told that it was the culprit for all the noises. I've had the truck since 2005 and I love it. I'm currently laid off and funds are tight. I already know how much a brand new trans is ($3000.00+) and a used trans is between $600.00 to $800.00 with no warranty or guarantees that a used trans will last. I have not looked into having the current trans rebuilt. I have looked at rebuild kits and noticed that they are less expensive than the other alternatives. Would it be worth taking a chance to have the trans in my truck rebuilt? Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Are you serious? I put many transmissions in my 85 Ram and it was only about $250 for a used one. When did the older ones get so expensive? I would definitely look at having it rebuilt. Wow!

Clunking when putting it into gear could be just alot of sloop or excessive backlash in the rear . Don't think that would come from the trans . High pitched whinning could also come from the rear . How does the trans shift ? Did you see the trans pan debris after they dropped the pan ? Let me know . Talk to ya soon . Tom Also don't forget to go to the newbie section and introduce yourself .

Hi there. I had the ring and pinion gears in the axle replaced with a brand new set. Also changed the universal joints, and front bearing. Transmission shifts fine, but after I had it serviced, all the noises got worse. Took the truck to a transmission shop where they got under the truck while it was running and listened to the trans with a stephoscope type device.

Hey there. I remember those days myself. In 1985 I bought a trans for a car I had, had it serviced and installed for $210.00! Guess those days are long gone.
