Clunking when putting it into gear could be just alot of sloop or excessive backlash in the rear . Don't think that would come from the trans . High pitched whinning could also come from the rear . Hi there. I had the ring and pinion gears in the axle replaced with a brand new set. Also changed the universal joints, and front bearing. Transmission shifts fine, but after I had it serviced, all the noises got worse. Took the truck to a transmission shop where they got under the truck while it was running and listened to the trans with a stephoscope type device.
