Default SRT10 hood & AMP ram air intake...

Was doing some research, and learned that the SRT10 hood, is not necessarily made for ram air. Instead, it is made for air to be sucked out of the engine bay. Now, I am aware that VOLANT makes a air intake system that allows the hood to be a fully functional ram air hood, but thats for the SRT10 truck itself, not a RAM 1500 for example that has the SRT10 hood... the VOLANT for the RAM 1500 does not seem to enable the SRT10 to be functional if your truck is equipped with one....(heres a pic http://moesperformance.com/images/16083install.jpg)....Now, AMP also makes a intake that would allow the SRT10 hood to be fully functional....(heres a pic http://www.stylintrucks.com/part.asp...&partid=739223....Now, it says that it is made for the AMP ram air hood, which is ugly...But what I am thinking is, since the SRT10 hood is open, and the AMP intake connects to the TB and sits directly in front of it (being directly behind an SRT10 hoods air duct), would this not work and create a true RAM AIR system?????

From what I've seen with my buddy's SRT-10 it's just open underneath the inlet. I think you'd have a better chance of adapting the Volant system to fit up to the SRT hood than trying to make the APM air box work; even if you'd be directing the air into the stock air box location THEN to the TB. with the APM, you'd have to try and make a seal around the SRT inlet (with fiberglass probably) so you're directing all the air into the air box, or else it's not gonna work the way it should, you'd lose a lot of the pressure into the engine bay. But if you're up to the challenge then def go for it and let us know, i'm sure there's lots of people interested in doing something similar.

yeah...ya know, I think ima go with the volant air scoop adapter....like you said, it is a sealed unit, and would have more pressure going into the intake than the AMF would....I really didnt know that volant had an adapter for the srt10 hood for trucks like mine with a 5.7 HEMI....So, now i got the setup i was looking for....since the volant system gains 36hp for the srt10, wonder how much i could expect from the regular volant cai, and then after i get a ram air hood, what would i gain with the adapter??? I would hope about 15hp...

I'm in the same boat. I'm going to do the APM. I know several guys that use this ram air box and they love them. True, you'll need to design some sort of seal around the opening of the the hood, but a trip to home depot, down the insullation isle should provide some ideas on creating a good seal.

yeah, i thought about that...the volant is gonna be expensive....Gotta get the original one for now which is about $280, and then the srt10 adpater scoop, which is about $250...Hefty price, I wouldnt mind it if I knew that I would gain a lot of hp like the srt10 kit did for the srt10 truck....I wonder if the APM would prodcue better hp with it sealed, more than the volant...

Well, you're both getting one of them, so why not compare notes when you're all done?

I know with my Suncoast ram air hood and ~75% seal to my CAI I still see an increase so it's working the way it's supposed to.

I agree, it may be easier to make the Volant system work. The concept of "ram air" works only at speed, doesn't do much for you to increase HP or torque at high RPM / lower speeds or lower RPM's at highway speeds. It will cool the intake charge like any other CAI which is good for engine heat and efficiency.

The design of the SRT hood was done just for the reason that was stated...to reduce underhood temperatures.

The Volant sealed box systems work sell. I've used several of their systems on different vehicles and have one on my Ram. Some additional cold air routed to it, regardless of whether or not you are trying to create a "ram air" effect, will always be a good thing. Just don't expect to get a huge increase in HP from it.

Don't forget, more air in requires more air out to reap the benefits of the cold air in. So consider an exhaust but don't go too large or you'll lose some torque at the lower end.
