Default First truck, 96 dodge 1500 5.9 (auto) questions and concerns

I just recently picked up my first ever truck (after only riding motorcycles for the last 5 years). It's a 96 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9 ltr automatic. I havnt really had to many issues with my truck but in the last couple of weeks Ive noticed some weird characteristics.

first, I just picked up some new tires for my truck and I notice when I'm parked and shift it in drive, every now and then when i first start rolling I sometimes feel a jolt. It feels like something may be working harder to move the new tires (drive train possible, i dont know). This only started happening once I got new tires on and does not happen everytime.

Also, It's just now starting to get cold in California and I noticed when I was driving to work in the morning, It appeared my truck wasn't kicking in to over drive. Later in the day, when I was driving home, over drive seem to be working just fine. Does the transmission need to warm up to a certain temp before over drive gets enabled?

Like I mentioned, This is my first truck and I'm pretty much mechanically declined. I appreciate any suggestions.

it sounds like the tranny is slipping in and out of gear...check your fluid level first, and go from there...

Well first off welcome to the Forumz, be sure to fill out all the info in the user CP so in later threads people know about your ride. Also, be sure to go to the newbie checkin for your formal introduction. As for your problems....I dont see whay the new tires would cause a jerk at all, but after hearing about your tranny not getting into overdrive, there may be an underlying problem with the tranny. When was the last time the tranny was serviced? Also, what is your driving habits (hard starts and stops)? Also when was your rear end serviced last? We have some great guys on here with tons of knowledge, Im sure we can get to the bottom of your issues pretty quickly. Thanks again for joining "The Z" and as always enjoy the board!!!

I havnt had the tranny serviced since I purchased it about 6 months ago, Im going to set up an appointment this friday.

I'm pretty tame when I drive my truck. I got my gixxer for the adrenaline rush but I pretty much baby my dodge. Also, I just had my rear differential fluid change and the mechanic had mentioned the differential was going to be replaced in the future.

yeah 6months since you bought it, and who knows when the last time the tranny was serviced before you bought it...Get it checked out, I would also check your throttle cable to make sure its set correctly and not causing a high rev, the rpm at NOT idle should be about 5-7k....

I have no clue maybe he was trying to hustle me or something!?

Is it possible my clutch plates are going bad? It kind of makes sense, OD not working in the cold morning but once the plates warm up in the afternoon it does. Also, when I drive and increase a gradual speed, when the truck shifts into 2nd, I also feel a jolt as well. Someone had previously told me that's normal for larger trucks but all these indications, could it possibly need a tranny rebuild. Ive been driving my truck daily and have gone on road trips with out any mechanical issues other then what I had mentioned above.

Id start with checking tranny fluid, then servicing the tranny and see if it helped
