Thumbs up Web Sites Who Promote American Products

MadeInUSA.com

In just a month since its official launch, a new Web site MadeInUSA has signed up more than 350,000 U.S.-based companies looking to encourage consumers to "be American and buy American." MadeInUSA is based on the principle that "patriotic spending" keeps hard-earned dollars, made on American jobs, in America. The Web site can help you find furniture, pet supplies, apparel and wine, to name a few, all at the click of a mouse.

Not to piss in the fire, but I wish there were sites about BuyNorthAmerican, not just america. They screw with us canadians when they get all introverted as the states is our biggest product importer.

Good info, there, sincebeen, and you have a good point, too, CdnoilRAM, especially considering when I read the window sticker on my truck it said "...75% U.S. AND Canadian parts content...."

I think every country should be proud of its products and promote its industry to the rest of the world. After all, we have to compete globally anyway, and any nation that isolates itself is not going to find itself on the winning end, so to speak. Unfortunately, the U.S. lost its competitive edge years ago, when we became less of a producer nation and more of a consumer nation, and, among other things, I think the whole "buy American" campaign is the U.S. not only trying to keep as many Americans working as possible but also an attempt to keep as many of our jobs IN America as we can.

It's just a little hard when so many big corporations are finding it cheaper to import than to manufacture in the US. NAFTA really helped mexico and canada a bit... but not the country that originally proposed it, except to drop retail prices.

Agreed, but a lot of our problem is not just the big corporations, at least in the industrial/manufacturing sector, but also BIG labor unions. That right there adds so much to the cost of manufacturing when you factor in pensions, benefits, etc. etc. IMHO, the time of unions is past. They were beneficial in getting some needed legislation passed in the way of worker safety, underage labor, and so on, but now they are just too big for their own good or that of the people they claim to represent.

I have to agree with you on NAFTA, also. That really should have opened up some doors for the U.S. to be able to capitalize on the opportunity, but that "giant sucking sound" that Ross Perot mentioned those years ago, is starting to get louder, lol! Gotta love the irony, though, our jobs are going south, but those folks are all coming here to work!

Ugh, don't get me started on unions. I have to deal with boilermakers and ironworkers all day, and well, we're not even allowed to get mad at them when they break our equipment or else they just stop work and wait until their union rep shows up 5 hours later. And the union 'quality work' is the same as the 'scabs' work, with less headache, IMHO. I'll probably be blasted for saying this, but unions are a big part of the downfall cuz they have too much power now over companies.

Wow, interesting. Didn't know you guys had much the same problem with that as we do in the states. They tried to unionize down here a few years ago, and it didn't meet with too much hospitality, if you know what I mean.

My neighbor before he passed away was big on it, chemical workers union. In fact, he was one of those who would travel a lot going to these companies trying to secretly talk their workers into joining. The way he spoke about it almost made it sound as if they were plotting some kind of coup, which I guess is not that far off a concept in this case, to go in and take over the workforce, but if there is nothing shady about what you're doing, why not put all your cards ON the table?

Another company in whose facility I was working at the time (I worked for someone else) already was union, and to me, next to non-union, they were lazy, IMHO. They took break time and quitting time a bit too literally for one, so there was never anyone around after hours if you needed to get something done, which, considering the oilfield is 24/7/365, got to be a pain. When they were on the clock, they were never in any particular hurry to get anything done, just waiting for lunch or the next break, so I can see why you would feel the way you do about the scabs. Do you feel that, in a way, their performance as opposed to union workers might not be a bit better since they really WANT to work whereas the others seem to care less until they get laid off and all heck breaks loose 'cause now all of a sudden they're making no paycheck at all?

Its not just the Unions, dont much care for them either but them 26 million dollar bonuses dont help anything at all,
Remember when Daimler was going to buy into Chrysler and all of a sudden the deal was off, I read somewhere that one of the ceos or something from Daimler said that he only got a million dollar bonus and that the bonus the ceo at Chrysler was getting was absurd so they backed out...
Also if you work in a plant or really just about anywhere the machines are made in Germany or somewhere, so the companies that want us to buy American should do the same...I know caterpillar (I worked there for a spell) doesnt have anything American made in the plants here cept maybe the people
Its a great idea and I do try to buy American made when I can, but its darn near impossible to find anything...
and even if this does take off and Americans do start buying only American made products the guvmint will just find some way to send it to some 3rd world country where the locals dont have enough sense to not drink outta the same ditches their water buffaloes are pissin in..
We need someone well a bunch of someones to get in the guvmint and run the trash out....
But there again we as a whole dont want to bother with something that doesnt affect us right here right now kinda attitude..
There was one war faught in this country already over less than whats going on right now...
Not meaning to make anyone mad or anything and these are just some of my thoughts after one cup of columbian coffee lol

Hey, man, I like me some Juan Valdez, too, and you're right, hard to find anything that is made here anymore, which was kinda' my point, just in a rather roundabout way, lol! I know when I was working offshore, all of our rigging had to be American. We would throw shackles overboard and if it floats, must be made in China, lol!

As far as Chrysler goes, the only option they had that I thought not only made sense but would be good for the company, the employees and the country was when the employees all banded to together and decided that for whatever they could afford to pitch in, they would buy the company, and you don't see any of them taking home 1 million + in bonuses, yet they can sacrifice for the good of something bigger than themselves....Sounds to me like some others might try doing the same for a change...

My other pet project, inventing a "Government Flush System," works on the same principle as your household commode, but this one is on a grander scale, just fill the capitol dome (after all it is a big bowl of crap, right?) with water, attach a GI-NORMOUS suction device, that once all the detritus is removed and stored on a big trash barge somewhere off the coast, then cleanliness can be restored....Boy, where am I ever going to find the parts for this project....

Maybe the shipbuilders union could fab something up for you Cajun, they work on big projects all the time that handle lots of crap and float no matter how hard you try to sink them...Titanic aside of course.
