I do not know what would sound better as i run just pipes from the cat back. The best type of exhaust that you could possibly have is just straight pipes. The only problem with that is that a lot of states and counties and stuff have sound ordinances where you can actually get pulled over and ticketed/mandated u make your truck/car quieter. If you plan on getting the whole exhaust done i would say to try and find a true dual 2.5" system. This is different than a cat back system. Catback still has both of the manifolds/headers feeding into a single pipe right before the cat's. This means that you may have a 2.5" system from the cat back but it is still the equivilant to whatever the stock y pipe is going into the cat divided by 2. True duals have just one pipe coming from each header. therefore true dual 2.5" is actually equal to 4-5" cat back. I wold recommend doing some research on where you live and whether or not they have sound restrictions. Then if you can go really loud either go with a true dual system with an x-pipe and a straight through "muffler" (actually a glasspack) or...if there is a restriction...i would still go with dual pipes for a little more power but put some mufflers on it. Heard good things about thrush and magnaflow. One last thing to keep in mind....the amount of back-pressure that you would be reducing by going with true duals or even bigger pipes will make your truck louder, and yes it would add hp, but it is going to reduce torque.

I had a 50 series flowmaster installed in place of the stock muffler about a year ago. Love the rumble of the engine , but ever since then I have had a lean condition. Tried 180 thermostat, K&N air filter, and superchips flashpaq tuner but still have too lean condition causing pre-ignition pinging.

The all pretty much flow the same, the difference is in sound modulation. I think they get quieter as the model number goes up.

kevin, welcome to the forum! What engine do you have? You may either have to increase fuel delivery or go with a higher octane fuel.

i found that 89 gets rid of the ping and gets a tad better mileage.

Just step up your grade of fuel . Might even want to look into water/methanol injection . That takes care of detonation . Check into Snow Performance if your interested .
