Default 17" rims VS. 20" Rims

Hey everyone,

A friend of mine has an 05 dodge ram with the stock 20" rims and I have an 05 dodge ram with stock 17" rims he has offered to trade me for my rims and that he will also give me $500 because my tires are in a much better condition. So i have a few questions based on this.

Does the spare's of both of these trucks match the rest of the rims. as i bought my truck about a month ago and haven't seen it yet since i'm still in iraq. and Would you do this trade if they were your rims.

Also what will it change going from the 17" rims that i have now to the 20's? I've heard it changes the ride, and handling in the snow (i live in wisconsin). will it also change my gas milage or mess with my speedometer.

the 17's i have are 265/75 17
the 20's are 275/65 20
or so i believe thats what both are.

Hi... I've recently switched from stock 17" to aftermarket 20". First thing to consider is the tire profile you'll put on those 20s. If the overall diameter remains unchanged (i.e. new rubber should have lower sidewall) no problem will arise in terms of speedo indicator nor gas mileage. So for a 20 rim tire profile should perhaps be a 50 or 60 instead of stock 75, just to yield a total 32 or 33 in. Let's do some maths here...

Stock:

265*0.75*2+17*25.4 = 843,9 mm overall diameter => 33 in

Yours:

275*0.65*2+20*25,4 = 865,5 mm overall dia. => 34 in

1 inch difference will make little in gas mileage, I think...

Radical changes tho, you'll notice in handling. Can't tell a word on riding on snow, since I live in the Caribbean (perhaps half a century later, climate crisis, y'know ) anyway... ridin' is harsher, lo-profile tires copy better any surface unevenness, theres a noticeable change in steering tact also... many people improves steering famping due to this.

Good luck... Hope you'll be back home soon.

one quick note... a wider tire generates more friction so gas mileage will be affected... but otherwise i agree with Marcelo

Does your truck have the tire pressure monitoring system ? If it does the sensors will need to be changed over from the 17s to the 20s . Might want to take into consideration the cost to replace the tires between the two different sizes . I know on my Ram the spare is just a plain old steel wheel . Don't know about the ride quality . Might want to go for a ride in his truck and see how it feels . As long as you keep the over all tire diameter close , you shouldn't have to do anything with the speedo .

I'm no tire expert but based on Marcelo's calculations as well as some of my own I think the change will be largly cosmetic. The way I figure (I'll go through the math if you like) you are only lossing 0.787 inches in air cushion. That's less than 9%. I don't think the difference in ride would even be noticable.

Feel free to refute my logic though, I'm essentially guessing. Also I'm biased, I want to trade my wheels for some larger ones so I would make the trade based on that.

GPSHSLAX - that does make sense so i've desided i'm defiently going to take his for a ride and see how it handles and make sure i'm satisfied.

Marcelo - None of it has been down by us. this deployment has been much more calm then the last time i was here. I'm just running security missions for higher ranked and civilian people so it s a pretty easy job cause they only really got to place's that are relatively safe. So i've got it pretty well made this time. and General's eat like king's so I definitely love the VIP treatment we get everywhere. LOL

Smile Rims

Hello. I too am not a tire expert but if the overall size is close speedo should be ok. I myself love the look of the 20s. I have them on my truck and its 2wheel drive. As for snow yah they push alil bit but i live in Ontario Canada and snow we get. The past couple years i would say there been a couple times i wish i had a 4x4 but not many. As for the 20s in the snow ive had them and 16s/17s not a big difference to me. My truck came with 20s and my spare is that as well.
