Default Painting Valve Cover Questions.

I've been contemplating painting various parts of my engine, and I am, and I plan to start with the "Valve Covers" I have some concerns though... was hoping you all could help me out here. Anywho:

A. it's all metal, How would I prep it? I saw metal enamels at the store today, but didn't see how heat resistant they were.

B. The whole gasket deal... I hear it would have to be replaced?

and C. Torquing down the bolts to hold it back on... I have also heard that there is a special way to do it or something like that? UGH haha

Here's a shot of what I'm workin' with.

Damn thats a good idea. Have you thought about a color yet or how your going to paint them? Like just the ribs the color of your truck and the depressions like a silver? That would look sick.

The main importance is to make sure you get all the oil residue off . If you can pull them and take to a machine shop and have them tanked . That will remove all the oil from them . Even once you get them back I would still wipe them down with a prep solv . Use a engine enamel primer and paint . Definitely replace the gaskets . Their probably the originals anyway . When I do valve cover gaskets , I always torque them down with a 1/4 inch hand ratchet . That way you know you can't over tighten them .

A) scub the cover with green scotch brite scrubby, this gives the paint a key to stick to. scub till the shine is gone from the black paint. wipe it down with a tack cloth to remove the dust. then wipe it down with prepaint to remove any remaining dust and greese. after the prepaint don’t touch it with your bare hands the oil from your skin will get on it. paint it with a metal primer. sand with 800 wet paper to smooth the primer, tack cloth, prepaint, and then paint with the finish color, probably 2 coats, maybe 3 if you use red. clearcoat it if you desire. as far as I know valve covers don’t get hot enough to need special paint. maybe someone else could help answer that.

B) I have had success in the past reusing valve cover gasgets several times, al long as they were not torn and did not sick to the head. but the covers were not as hard to get to as yours looks in the pic. I would consider going with a new one rather than having a leak.

C) I have not had a leak just tightening the bolts hand tight in a crisscross patter like you would when putting on a tire.

if you twotone it like moparguy86 suggests, I would consider painting it silver (or whatever base color you chose) and hand pinstipping the top of the ribs with a brush. you could try wide pinstrip tape but the heat could take it back off. spraying it with the other color will require a lot more down time and masking it off etc....

Who knows, the engine is SO BORING. Yeah it's clean, but the whole damn thing is basically black. There is nothing unique but the headers. Lol

Good input. I've been looking for a good part time job for quite a while now, have a feeling that I'll achieve at least an interview within the next 2 weeks at a grocery store.

Hopefully I'll come across more money, people don't go to much winter shows for local bands seeing as most shows are in seattle, miles from anywhere.
