Hey guys...new to this forum. Just purchased a 99 dodge ram about a month. Getting ready to do an engine swap on it because it has a rod knock. The truck is a quad cab sport model with a "rebuilt" auto trans. It also has a 3 inch suspension lift on it already. I am going to post in another section about going from the 5.2 to the 5.9. I am sure that has been covered on here, and I have found 1 article on it already, but I just had a couple more questoins, but I will save that for the other section.

Travis.

Welcome to the forum, Travis. I too have a '99. It's a 5.2L, SLT extended cab 4X4. But changes are coming.

Found an engine yet?

Welcome to the Z! We'll keep an eye out for the swap post and hopefully you can fill us in during the process. Nothing beats hands on experience, and we hope to hear more about it. Are you planning any mods to the 5.9L when you're putting it in like a cam or a beefier bottom end?

Great to have ya here . Definitely gonna need pics . Any plans for mods ? Going from the 5.2 to 5.9 will require a torque convertor change . The 5.9 is externally balanced . I would also recommend to you before you put the motor in , to reseal the intake manifold . There is a plate on the bottom side of the manifold that is notorious for a gasket failure . If theres any questions you need answered , feel free to post them and someone will be there to give you an answer . If you have any other Ram buddies tell them about us . We would love to have them . You will find this site is full of a lot of talented people .Talk to ya soon . Tom

thanks for the welcome guys. I have found another engine, well actually an entire truck. The truck is a 95 ram that was in perfect shape in and out until it was wrecked. So it is going to be the donor truck for the engine and torque converter, and I thought that since this truck was an auto, it woulnd't hurt to have an extra one anyway...haha.
No pictures yet, I took the bed off the truck, and sanded the frame and painted it gloss black. I am going to put new shocks on it as well since the bed is off of it, it looks like that would make it a lot easier.
I will keep you guys updated on the swap progress, and there is def. a lot of helpful info on here.

Another questoin...did the automatic 318 trucks and 360 trucks have the same gears in the rear end? Also, would a 5 speed truck have different gears? I have the rear ends from each, and kind of wanted to know which one would be best behind the 360 automatic.

Sounds like quite the project, Travis. In answer to your question on gears, any SB 1/2T model truck could have one of possibly 3 different gear sets, depending on the build sheet.

A 5-speed would have the same potential options but probably came with the 3.73 or 4.10 gear sets available because of the numerically lower drive 5th gear out of the transmission.

Normally, the higher numbered gear ratio sets were part of the towing package option. The most commonly used ratios were 3.55:1, 3.73:1 and 4.10:1 for the light duty trucks. Some HD diesel units were equipped with 4.56:1 sets as an option.

To determine what gear ratio you have in either truck, count the number of gear teeth on the ring and pinion. Then, you can calculate the ratio. Here's a simple and easy online calculator you can use to determine the ratio:

http://www.ringpinion.com/Calc_GR.aspx

Now, you may ask; "What gear ratio should I use?"

That depends on how you will be using the truck most of the time. If most of your driving will be highway driving, go with the 3.55 gear set. You can still do some light towing and have the advantage of better fuel mileage. If you are going to be off-road quite a bit, pulling hills or towing a boat or trailer a lot, go with 3.73's. I'd stay away from the 4.10 unless you really need some grunt to pull heavier loads consistently.

Keep in mind that if you change gears from what the truck was built with, you'll want to re-program the ECM for that gear ratio value. Your dealer can flash your ECM for that value or you can get a programmer with that option.

Good luck with your project!
