Default Engine swap 5.2 to 5.9...newbie

I just got a 99 dodge ram sport, quad cab with the 5.2 in it. When I got it, it has a rebuilt trans, but a rod was knocking in the motor. I ran across a 95 ram 1500 that was wrecked but had a good drive train. The motor in the 95 is the 5.9 360. I have researched, and have found different information. I am sure this has been covered on here, so if someone could just point me in the right direction that would be great. So far I have found that I would have to change: Torque converter since the 360 is externally balanced, flywheel for the same reasoning. I have read mixed reviews on changing the computer. Some say the 5.2 computer will work fine, other say it will work, but the truck won't run right, and others say you have to change it. I would think that it would need to be changed. I think the plugs would be different on the 95 computer, so if that is the case, I will also have to change the wiring harness in my truck. I think everything else should be direct bolt, but I just wanted to be sure. So if I am missing something please let me know.

Thanks,
Travis

It's a doable swap, Travis. You are correct about the flexplate and torque converter...swap them out with the 360 pieces.

Swap out the computer as well if you can get if off the wrecked truck. I'm not sure about any plug differences but I suspect they are the same.

Your other option is to reflash your 5.2 computer with a 5.9 program or a custom burn from B&G.

i am getting the entire truck, but I didn't know about putting the 95 computer in a 99 truck, if that would cause any issues with electronics or anything
Would a dealer be able to reflash and put the new program on without buying a tuner?

I have done this swap and didn't need to swap out the computer or engine harness . The truck I did , originally had a 5.9 in it . The guy swapped out to a 5.2 . Not sure if the 5.2 didn't last because of the wrong convertor (?) or because he runs the ever living snot out of it . When it came to me the first time , I pulled the tranny out for a rebuild . Knowing that it had a 5.2 in it and this being the original tranny from behind the 5.9 , I installed the correct convertor . My rebuider checked and said yes there was a difference . He wasn't sure what the difference was but with my experience with Mopars I know that the 5.9s are externally balanced . As I also said in your newbie check in , don't forget to reseal that plate on the intake manifold . Any questions feel free to ask . Tom

If I ended up having 3.55 gears in my truck and I wanted to switch to 3.73 or something like that, would I also need to change the gear ratio for the front end since the truck is a 4x4?

Yes , or if you didn't ever plan on putting it in 4x4 , just pull the front driveshaft . Someone else on here recommended this to someone last week . I have seen , when there are two different gear ratios in a 4x4 and you activate it , the mess you end up with . Not pretty . In your situation of going to something like a 3.73 rear , I wouldn't do it . Your not going to see much of a change .

i dont think having different gears will mess it up as long as the tires are spinning. but if the front or rear end hooks its over.
