I am somewhat convinced it's cheaper to maintain than most vehicles after 100k, or even worth it if I had to replace the engine (cheaper in the long run). My wifes VW Beetle was a nightmare in repair costs. All of mine were 1/5 the cost to fix hers. Am I in dream world here that 2nd generation Rams (despite gas costs) are the most efficient trucks on the road?

It's running sluggish with a bad Cat. Should I replace it along with an exhaust upgrade? What would be cost effective? Should I hold out on the tune-up until the Cat replacement. Should I replace the headers as well? Are there additional upgrades required beyond that? I am not looking to drive it like a road warrior, just want to have fun every now and then and keep the other guy busy trying to cut over into my lane. And desiring more MPG (I'm getting 200 per tank and I drive like an old man).

Cost here is somewhat a concern, but is it worth it on an old Ram, and is it totally worth it to keep this truck in the long run?

Depends on how you look at it. If you get a new truck, you will making $1000/m payments for 3+ years, longer with lower payments. How much repairs can you do with 1 month worth of payments? .....3 months? .......6 months?

You see where I'm going with this.

If your payments are 1000/m and you invest 1000 into repairs and that lasts 2months, you are ahead of the game by 2X.

The final choice is yours, but if it's still in reasonable condition, and you 'know' it and are happy with it, buy it a new cat, plugs, air filter and an oil change and enjoy the lack of payments for a few more months!

I agree with Brad, fix the cats and do a good tune up. Fixing it is a good deal for as long as you can keep the ratio of repairs cheaper than you can afford on a payment, besides you can set aside that $1000/mo payment savings and then get a newer truck with all the savings!

+1. definitely better to keep a "paid for" vehicle over something you have to make payments on... and then also if it breaks down... fixing it too. that REALLY blows! keep it, fix it, Enjoy it. repeat if necessary.

Another thing to take into consideration. With our economy... Parts can wait... Payments can't/won't. Keep the truck!
