I do know that you want to make the shift from 4hi to 4lo and back quickly, without stopping the transfercase selector in the neutral position or it will grind. then the best thing to do is shut off the engine and finish the change, then start it back up.

I partially have the truck torn apart right now. I am getting ready to put new endlinks, and bilstein 5100 shocks on, trans has been rebuilt, and going to put a 360 down in it with a CAI and some shorty headers I believe. Also, it will be getting a new paint job. As soon as I get it back together, I will try some of the suggestions on here. When the trans was rebuilt, the transfer case was also gone through to make sure everything was working correctly. Is it possible the shifter needs to be adjusted on it?

I am not familiar with the 99 but you did not say if you turned a knob or pulled a floor shifter. All transfer cases go into neutral when going from hi to low or low to high. If you have your transmission in gear, as soon as you move the lever from low towards high you hit neutral and the trans will spin the input shaft and thus the gears are not meshed and they grind. Make sure you have unwound the drivetrain, put the trans in neutral, slowly rolling can help, go into hi, put trans back in gear. Then go to 2wd. Been four wheelin for years. Play with it. You'll learn what works best.
