Exclamation Exhaust Question????????????

I bought a Super 44 series muffler. Brought it to be put on and I never noticed it was a 2.5 in to a 2.5 out . Do I need to go get a bigger muffler? When I get on it it almost sounds like I am forcing air out. The pipe before the muffler is changing colors to a redish. Please let me kno if i need to change. I will head to the muffler shop Monday if so.

Default exhaust answer

if not mistaken, the exhaust dodge trucks are 3 inch pipes in and out themuffler. If the muffler shop down sized the pipe to 2 1/5 , they took your money. You should have got a 3 inch to 3 inch. I would assume you have restricted the exhaust flow, which cannot be good

Are you running true dual exhaust?

Is it a single in/single out muffler?

I'm assuming it's all welded on, if it's not I would highly recommended doing so. But check all of the welds for any defects, you never know...

If you're running a single muffler exhaust setup and want to stay with the 44 series here's a link to a muffler that has a 3" inlet and dual 2.5" outlets.
Super 44 3.00" IN(C)/2.5"OUT(Dual) 409S Stainless

Can you post a picture of the pipe turning colors? It's probably due to normal operation and heat, but post one anyway.

But if you change the pipe size running from your headers to the muffler to 3" that should fix your problem with the 'forced air' sound.

Hey, If your intermediate pipe is getting so hot its starting to turn red, thats bad news for your engine. I am sure its putting a lot of strain on your valves and rings. Heat is a major killer for any component. Your building too much back pressure. I must say though I am very surprised that droping from 3" to 2.5" would actually cause such a significant issue. 2.5" pipe is still big enough that I wouldn't think it would cause that. Is the pipe your looking at in front of the converter, or between the muffler and converter? If its in front of the Cat. it could be the converter thats the issue. Maybe they damaged it putting your muffler on. Another possiblility is the converter has broken up and a piece of it has wedged itself at the neck of the muffler restricting flow. With the system cool, bang the muffler and converter and listen for any loose peices moving around inside.
Good luck, don't ignore it!

Dang, I would have thought they would have at least mentioned it to you before going ahead and putting that muffler on.

Crooks.

will post pics soon. Its fom the motor to the muffler thats getting a red tint to it. No rattle when I beat on it anywhere. Would it sound any better if I make it dual? I have from the factory a single exhaust. I also have the 32 gallon fuel tank. What muffler or mufflers would give me a deep tone and a roar on the highway?
