Default Exhaust on 4.7

I tend to research things a lot before I finally move. I'm planning to eventually get an exhaust system. I wanted opinions on a decent preforming cat back system. I really don't care too much about the sound. I figure I'll end up with improved sound regardless, so I'm really interested in performance and price. What does everyone think is the best performing cat back system for the money that will fit with the 4.7 2wd (are there huge differences in terms of fit between engines and axels)?

I have another questions as well, and this one might be silly. When I was last under the truck I noticed what appeared to me to be 2 catalytic convertors plummed in parrallel? I was confused by this as I've only ever heard of multiple cats being arranged in series and I don't recall anyone mentioning it here. Of course I have next to no experiance working on cars. This is the first vehichle I've ever been able to fit under to notice such things. If not catalytic convertors, then what the devil are the two expanded section just behind the engine, and where is the cat actually?

Do you mean a catalytic converter after each manifold before going into the "Y" pipe? I've seen that before on other Rams.

If you lose the resonator out back and stay with the 3" piping, I hear there is a noticable gain in not just sound, but the butt dyno as well.

Yes, that's what I'm talking about. So I am correct then that that there are two parrallel cats? Would this indicate that a cat back system for this vehichle in fact requires two replacement cats?


By the way, is the resonator in this vehichle seperate from the Muffler or integrated? I can't see a seperate resonator, but I didn't crawl under, just looked with a flashlight.

On the HEMIs, there's a cat attatched to each manifold before joining at the y-pipe, so I wouldn't be surprised that it's a similar set up on the 4.7L. Most cat-back systems actually join up AFTER the y-pipe, so there's some wiggle room when installing them. Am I correct in assuming you have a single-in/dual-out muffler? I haven't actually crawled under anybody's '09 to look.

The resonator is after the muffler near the rear tire. Forgot that the regular cab Rams might not have one though, I see them mostly on the quad cabs.

Ok, good. I was starting to feel awfully silly if I couldn't find it.

Question about performance still stands then. Any suggestions on the best cat back for performance (enphasis on MPG), the sound being a bonus?
