Why is it that when I'm traveling down the rail at 55 MPH approaching a crossing, (I've got all the lights on, blowing the horn and making enough noise to wake up the county, crossing gates down, warning lights flashing) just about every other car can't wait to jump out in front of me. They just HAVE to get to the other side of the crossing, rather than wait the 2 minutes it'll take me to get out of the way.

Yet if I pull up to the same crossing and STOP. I turn out the headlights, the gates are up, and the warning lights are not flashing, just about every car will pull up and stop, refusing to go across the crossing until we wave them across.. I fail to understand!

Everyone, please take the time to think about railroad safety. 100% of the time when a train meets a motor vehicle, the train wins. Some of these trains have in excess of 20,000 tons behind them, and they'll take what seems like forever to stop. Look, Listen, and Live is more than just a slogan, it's true!

OK, I just had to vent folks. Thanks for putting up with me, as it sometimes gets old watching a automobile disappear under the nose of the locomotive, only to shoot out the side, all the while listening for the "thump".

GREAT info. I did my high school science fair project on miniature trains compared to the full scale versions they are modeled after. Sat in on some Operation Lifesaver meetings and got to ride with a switcher. Witnessed this same thing, cars, trucks, even big rigs would try to beat the crossing gates!

The one thing that stood out above everything else was people don't realize the force behind a moving train. If you can imagine this, a train hits a car with the same weight ratio as a car running over a soda can.

Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected?

A compromise is an agreement whereby both parties get what neither of them wanted. Anybody can win, unless there happens to be a second entry.

Sometimes I wonder, "Why is that frisbee getting bigger?" ... And then it hits me.

I'm not cynical. Just experienced.

Men kick friendship around like a football, but it doesn't seem to crack. Women treat it like glass and it goes to pieces.

I hate to post right after myself, but I found some interesting facts.

An office desk has about 400 times more bacteria than a toilet.

New York City was briefly the U.S. capital from 1789 to 1790.

In a lifetime, the average driver will honk 15,250 times.

The average person will spend 2 weeks over their lifetime waiting for the traffice light to change.
