Default No reverse in tranny

Hello, got a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4, a 360 ci with 72,000 miles on it.
Got off of work yesterday to find I had no reverse gear. This came out of the blue. Never had problem with reverse. If I am parked on level ground, it will roll back an inch or two in reverse, but after that, nothing. If I am parked on a slight decline this slight roll will be enough to slowly roll me backwards to get out of a parking spot. Parked on an incline, forget it.
I live in Iowa and it get cold here in the winter. last year the tranny had a slight slip in it in drive when it was really cold, but had no problems after warm up.
Also when braking lately, in the last 5-10 feet before stopping at a stop sign, sometimes there has been a slight vibration in the truck that i have attributed to just needing new brakes pads. Maybe this was the tranny?
I have talked to a Dodge tech on the phone. He suggested I bring it in for a diagnostics test. I want to avoid a $2,500 tranny replacement if it comes down to that.
My bro sugested I talked to a tranny shop or consider buying a junk yard tranny and swapping them out myself with his help.
I have spent the last 3 years periodically towing a travel trailer and boat I owned, but no longer have, so I wont be towing anything in the forseable future. The truck never had slippage when towing my toys.
This truck has never had slippage in drive in anything but really cold weather.
No warning code/check engine light is coming on.

Anyone else had problems like this before? What was thie cause?
Any ideas of what componant might be failing in my tranny?
Should I even get a diagonostic test if I go the route of buying a junk yard tranny?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I had a similar problem on another Dodge I had. It was the linkage and shift forks inside the tranny.

I'd get the diagnostic to determine exactly what is wrong so you can decide which way to go with the repair or a refurb trans.

Found some info on the web about Dodge tranny. Keep in mind this might not apply to my particular model of transmission.
"If the low/reverse band has gone out, or needs adjustment, you will have no reverse AND no engine braking in manual low."
I drove to 3,000 RPM in low 1. I had minimal engine braking at best.
I also hear if the reverse band is the culprit, my overdrive wont engage. This im not sure about. I will take it out and test that theory tommorrow after work.
I did see in my Chiltons book that there is a adjustment screw for the reverse band accesable after you take the tranny pan off.
I may just get the tranny diagnostics done as soon as possible before I try any fix-ups myself. Hope I can get it in this week as it is a short work week.

Going to pull the transmission cover off thursday or friday to inspect any damage.
Tech told me if there is shavings, I`ll need a rebuilt tranny. If there are broken parts of the band in there, he says he "thinks" he can replace it with a new one with just taking out a little of the valve body and putting a new band in, then replacing the valve body. In essence fixing it without taking the tranny out of the truck.
Crossing my fingers for a cheap outcome to this.

HAHAHA!!!! I laugh because I had a '76 Dodge Royal Monaco do that same thing to me (Iowa also). I drove it 3 months with no reverse. Cost me $300 to have a new reverse band installed. You didn't make a mistake on parking where you couldn't drive out or roll backwards more than once.

Just paid $28 for 6 quarts of O`Reillys ATF-4 automatic tranny fluid.
Pains me to put this fluid in after dropping the pan, just to drive the truck to the tranny shop after I`m done and lose $28 worth of fluid.
I seen at O`Reillys a big jug of multi-purpose auto tranny fluid for just $11. Could I buy this fluid just to run it for a few days before taking it to the tranny shop? In order to save a few bucks?
The ATF-4 states it is for Dodge vehicles. The multi-purpose fluid is just that.

I would of installed regular old tranny fluid . Or try to reinstall your old stuff . The shop is going to install a new filter and fresh fluid anyway .

Havent drained the pan yet. I can try to filter the old fluid and put it back in. as long as it doesnt smell burnt.
And save my $28 fluid for the next change. :P
