Default Crankcase Oil Level Inspection

The manual for my '09 Ram, states to check oil level, run engine for abt 10 minutes, with engine off, wait abt 5 minutes and then check the level. I have done that, then, hours later when I check it again, it is quiet higher.
If I were to add oil to bring it up to the top, hours after the first check, it would be above the high mark (line) So, my engine actually holds more than 7F qts? This is all done with the truck on a level surface.
How do you guys check your oil?
Thanks,
Jack

The oil in the case runs through the gears when the truck runs, they have you wait the 5 minutes so it can settle just enough to get an accurate reading. When it settles all the way it may seem to be higher but, that is only because of the oil is settleing to the bottom and as soon as the truck is started the oil runs through the gears again in order to keep them lubricated.
