I work for TDOT (TN Dept. of Transportation) and for years they changed the oil in our sedans and pickups at 5000 miles. We get low bid vehicles, so we have all brands. Also, since the vehicles don't belong to the people they are assigned to, they usually get "special" treatment. There were very few problems at the 5000 mile interval. A couple years ago, the interval went to 7500 miles. I wasn't too excited about that, but I've heard of no issues since. For years, I was stuck on the 3000 mile oil change interval on my own vehicles. The oil companies claim 3000 and the owner's manual says 5000. Two years ago, I split the difference and went to a 4000 mile interval.

I cant get it through my head to change at more than 5K. I really get the itch at 3 and usually pull oil samples at that distance and see whats left in the oil around 4500. Even though they come back clean every time i still change it

I have always used Castrol in every vehicle since the mid 1980's. Usually go 3000 to 4000 miles. My belief is that the viscosity doesn't break down as much at that interval and it won't build up sludge either. I can honestly say I've never had an engine problem and never had one burn or leak oil. Many of them had well over 100k on them. Also I go with whatever weight oil the owners manual recommends.

3k oil changes just seem crazy to me, especially for you guys running Mobil 1.

5k here. Running behind on the current oil change though, almost @ 6500

If I'm doing a lot of in town driving or towing I like to change it at around 2000 miles. If it's easy highway miles anywhere from 3000-4000 miles. I use regular Valvoline dino oil, 5w-20.

But one thing nobody mentions here is that the owner manual (at least on my 2011) requires that it's changed at least every 6 months, regardless of the mileage. Does anyone follow that maintenance requirement? I do.

Evidently oil degrades over time, too. And that's one reason I probably won't switch to synthetic.

Bill

If you have a certified Chrysler warranty no more than 6 months/6000 miles which ever comes first.

Every 3000. Pennzoil and a Mopar filter. I'm old school when it comes to maintenance.

Default Oil Changes, MOST important thing

I change my oil every 3K (Gas and Diesel). The last new Vehicle I bought, I went 320K on the original motor, after 320K all that went wrong was a sloppy timing chain. I changed the oil at 50 Miles, 100 Miles, 500 Miles, 1K, 1,500 miles 3K and every 3K after that. I ran Valvaline Max Life, synthetic Blend, as the Valvoline Dura-Blend is hard to find in a 5w-20.

Just my .02.

If you use cheap oil w/ cheap filter Id stick with the 3000-4000. Using high quality synthetics with a quality filter has proven to go 10k+. Theres been many people who have done oil analysis' if you look around on the internet and youll be surprised at the results.

This 3,000k business is a thing of the past. I believe even with dino-oil you can still go 4,000-5,000 as its alot better than the old days. If you are spending the money for M1 or equivalent and changing every 3,000 you are being robbed by yourself. Do an oil analysis if you dont believe me. Ive done one up to 6500 and theres been no signs of the oil wanting to quit.

Really nowadays its more filter limitation. Your filter will go before your oil will usually but if you stick with a quality filter that is a bit oversize you will be good. M1 uses oversize filters which help them last a bit longer not to mention are of higher quality. If you are a FRAM type guy, well maybe 3,000 is for you.
