Default Building a HEMI

Hey guys, I'm trying to put together a shopping list for my '04 5.7! All it has right now is a magnaflow cat back. On the way are a BFI Intake, Predator programmer, and I'm having a Y-Pipe fabbed up.. Eventually (hence the list) I'd like to do heads, cam, transmission, headers, and somewhere down the road a supercharger.

I've been looking at the Sharadon performance stage 2 tranny, any experience with this one? Will it hold up? I'm scared if I do to much my stock 90,000 miles tranny will give up.. I also looked at comp cams XFI Hydraulic roller cams.. the 268 and 273. Anyone have any experience with these? The heads are a different story, I have no idea on where to go with the heads, and I haven't even begun looking for headers as of yet.

Any suggestions on what to add and what not to add? Brands/specifics appreciated.

I've never personally heard of Sharadon , but others here on the site talk highly of them . Might not be a bad idea to talk to our vendors and get their recommendations ( RDP Motorsports , Moes Performance ).

I've also heard good things about the Sharadon trannys. I'd recommend checking out Moe's Performance or RDP performance, both supporting vendors on here with lots of great stuff for the HEMIs. I will soon be picking up the Inertia Motorsport ported/polished heads and SC spartan cam for my HEMI then will be getting a Prochager intercooled system.

As for the tranny, you can take your stock tranny to a performance shop and they can rebuild yours up to handle up to 1,000HP if they know what they're doing. Basicall they just use the housing and install completely new internals and works out to a similar price to a new performance tranny.

Here's a question, I was talking to a guy at a performance shop today about what I'd like to do to the truck, and he said don't touch the heads or internals and throw a kenne bell blowzilla on there, that's all you need. Doesn't seem right?

that doesn't sound quite right. You might be able to just put a supercharger on, and see significant gains, sure, but I'm almost certain that by using heads and a cam designed to be used with a supercharger, you'll gain a lot more.

You may also want to look at upgrading parts in the lower end of your motor too once you start making a lot more power than stock- like the connecting rods, and maybe the pistons. The stock connecting rods mayb be beefy enough to handle a lot more power, but I dunno- I'd say it's definitely worth researching.

You can do the Kenne Bell system on a stock motor (seen them on a few 5.7L HEMI cars) but understand you are limited in how high you can set the boost pressure.

The HEMI car 5.7L engines have a very narrow gap between the top two rings. Excess boost or NOS tends to create too much heat at the ring lands and they fail. I suspect that the truck engines have the similar ring architecture.

Boosting an engine usually means adding some forged pieces, some head and intake porting and a lowering in compression. Of course, the piston rings and lands will remain an issue unless you replace the pistons when doing the rotating assembly.

Comp or Spartan cams seem to be preferred. We did a Comp 268 in a 2007 5.7L Hemi Magnum this year and with a bit of tuning with the Predator on a dyno, it really work up the car. We also did rockers and modified a set of 6.1L Hemi exhaust manifolds (they really are a shorty header) to accept a change in EGR locations and did some simple porting on the stock heads to round it all out.

Good luck with your mods!

I agree with Michael...there are so many variables with superchargers to consider..and tuning is key...if you do any towing i would stay away from fi and go the na route.

Do you have an RC or QC? that also is the key for cam selection. Qc's would benefit moreso with the comp 260 instead of the 268 (qc's need a torque cam while rc's like hp cams) or a variant of Inertia Motorsports Spartan cam.

On another note..with my Spartan equipped na qc, I beat a paxton sc'd rc at the track.. an an srt10 rc as well..

..the key is, do your research on what works with our hemi Rams... and take advice from people experienced with our trucks. What works in theory sometimes doesn't work well with our trucks..

I'll give you one example... the 3 quickest na stock block qc's (in the 1/4 mile) run either the Spartan cam (2 of the trucks) or the SRTMax cam (both of these are from Inertia Motorsports)... so this info gives you an inside track of cams that work well in our trucks..

sorry to ressurect a somewhat older thread. but chefred, what supporting mods did you have to beat that srt? was it with the 260? theres no way you beat a supercharged hemi with just a cam, is there?
