Default Winter Tires

Fellow Members,

I was wondering what are you using for winter tires? On my old truck I had Cooper Discoverer STT all year around and it was a good all season rubber, but I'm thinking to get real winter tires now, like Bridgestone Blizzak.
What's your opinion and suggestions?
Thanks!

The Blizzaks are an exceptional choice, although my ram is only 40 days old I may be running the stockers for the first bit in the winter up here in Grande Prairie. If I do go with winters than I may be looking into the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 SUV.

I ran Blizzaks on the last truck and they were pretty good, but I upgraded to a set of the studded Hakkapelitta 5s a couple years ago and it was a night and day difference. Studded isn't a requirement unless you end up in places with lots of ice, like going to the mountains regularly or the unpredictable weather belt around red deer.

I just put E-load BFGoodrich ATs on my work truck and damn the tread depth is crazy. The el-cheapo studded winter only tires I bought from Kaltire for my old truck were pretty amazing. Even with the turbo and on a frozen lake.

The stock Wranglers are pretty good on the Outdoorsman. I didn't have any problems last winter with mine.

If they're brand new they're not bad, but wear them a bit and they become worse than my summer tires. The rubber compound actually hardens from the heat cycling and it can be like driving on hockey pucks.

I had Michelin X-Ice on my previous truck, they were pretty good. Just looking at some for my RAM, the LT's on the Outdoorsman are definitely not cheap around here. Best deal I've found so far will be over $1150 for a set of Firestone Wiinterforce. The Nokians would be over $1400, almost $1500 if studded. TireRack has a pretty good review of the Firestones so I'll probably get them.

i ran those firestone winterforce tires and loved them. they give amazing traction. i used them as an all terrain tire and they do just as well in mud as they do in deep snow. i had them on my grand cherokee they were one of the best tires i have ever owned. i got 85000 kms out of mine and i ran them all year long.

I'd say the hakkapeliitta line of winters are the best of the best out there. But I was on more of a budget when I got my winters. I got 17" Dakota rims and wrangler territory's off kijiji brand new for cheap and studded them and couldn't be happier. They dig in the deepest fresh powder and the studs take ice like nothing. I used my truck to knock down huge snow drifts on our street last year and pack the snow so my mom's Chrysler could get through. Got slightly high centered on one that was nearly a 3 foot drift but put her in reverse and got right out and then went at it again no problem.

This is just what our driveway was like when I came home after a wicked storm. I was more concerned about wrecking my bumper

I run the Nokian Hak 7's and they are a great tire. I did run the Bizzaks but tread life on them sucks. The 2nd winter I ran them they were no where near as good as when I first put them on and by the end of the 2nd winter they were worse than all seasons.
