I had my first oil change light come on at about 2800 miles. Since I had a free oil change coupon from the dealer I went in and had it done. I asked the service advisor why the light went on at 2800 and the service manual say's up to 6000 miles. He told me that the best thing to do is to follow the EVIC's recommendation on when to change the oil because it works on how you use your engine. Short trips, stop and go, temperatures, and that kind of stuff. He told me that you can't go wrong to go by that but that some people are old school and change their oil at 3000 miles and that others wait. As long as you stick to what the owner's manual says and don't go over the recommended oil change, then they can't blame you for anything.
A lot of people recommend doing the first oil change early. There's a lot of oil change threads here and I think the concensus is that the first oil change early is smart. And if you change to amsoil, just don't wait 10000 miles or 25000 miles to change your oil because that's not what the manufacturer recommends. If you take your truck to the dealer with an engine problem, then the dealer won't be to eager to provide your warranty work if they find out that you only change your oil every 25000 miles because you run amsoil.
