How often do you people detail the engine compartment. For me it's a monthly ritual and takes less than 1/2 hr.

I have no specific time schedule on cleaning under the hood of my truck. And where i live its almost pointless to do unless the dirt is really moist and wont fly up. I live in a really dusty area...

But when i do it i make it look like a new one. I do not spray anything down with water or use a degreaser. You do not have to. I just use a microfiber towel damped with Meguiars Natural Shine Protectant to clean off stuff and change out the microfiber towel when needed, then i go over it all again with the Meguiars Natural Shine and use scott shop towels to apply (somtimes ill use a microfiber towel to apply). It works great for me! And you can use it on the fender wells under the hood, i use a microfiber towel on the fenderwells. It takes me over an hour to finish under my hood, i spend alot of time makeing it look new.

Default Engine Washing

I have washed engines with a pressure washer more than a hundred times, I owned a pressure wash company a while ago.

1 Always cover Alt with plastic bag, & wipe off with damp cloth after washing engine to clean.

2 Never spray directly onto distributor or coil.

3 Cover air intake if open or you have a CAI

4 When done spray all wiring and batt terminals with WD and rest of engine compartment with an Armour All type product and in 15 mins it will look awesome & start right up

5 If using a pressure wash do not go too close to the rad fins

When done, open up the hood and tell me if it doesn't look brand new. Next time you do it, that Armor All is still on there and makes it easier to wipe right up. Just my method though.

I mist, wipe, mist, spray, and walk away

I've used this method before on my vehicles too. Never had an issue. Also used some engine cleaner that foams and then you spray off.

I discovered this method once when I was washing the engine on my bike and a friend had given me some advice on how to get looking like new. This is similar to Chitheads method.
I give the engine a quick rinse down to get the dust off and then I spray the whole compartment with engine de-greaser, let it sit for about 10 minutes and they spray it all off.
Here is the trick, now take a can of tire cleaner, the foaming stuff and spray the whole engine compartment. Once it dries it will be all shiny and new. You will love the results.

to clean mine i will spray the engine off with a normal garden house then spray simple green everywhere then take an old paint brush and work it into the nooks and crannys and then rinse the engine off. ill then let it dry and put a plastic protectant on all the plastic parts

I don't trust Simple Green around my truck. I tried cleaning the gunk off my gutters one time with it. It took the paint off them.

The best cleaner I have ever found is called Totally Awesome. Best of all, its only $1.00 a bottle at the dollar store. It's the only product I have found that will even take the black streaks off my camper and and clean my boat, and does great on the siding on my house. Its safe on just about everything, and works great on engines.
