Default In case of a medical emergency

I see it everyday as I respond to people's homes. You ask them for information and they run around trying to find the medications, insurance cards, identifications, or just simply trying to remember what medical problems they have. Some people take so many medications that they don't know what each one does.

Do you have parents or other family members that you care for?
Do you or a family member take a lot of medications?
Is someone in your family ill and might require use of 911?

Then just as a suggestion, do yourself or your family member a great service by doing the following to save time in case of an emergency.

You could do this on a sheet of paper with a pen or type it on the computer.
Include the following information:
1. Name
2. Date of birth
3. Home phone number
4. Family member's phone number to contact (for hospital)
5. Social security #
6. Insurance/medicare/medicaid information if any
7. Allergies to medication
8. Medical conditions or surgeries (present and past)
9. Medications currently being taken
10. Doctor's name
11. Any other pertinent information 911 or the hospital should know.

You could make a few copies so EMS can take one and give it to the hospital in case you are not there and your family member is alone and cannot provide all the information. This will save a lot of time in case of an emergency where time is everything such as in cases of a heart attack or stroke.

Leave this in a common place where it can be found such as kitchen counter or table where medications are kept. It's no good if EMS can't find it and you are not there to give it to them in case your family member can't communicate.

Hope this helps.

A copy of a living will, health care power of attorney would also be useful. And if applicable, a copy of a do-not-resuscitate order should be readily available.

I've already taken a similar route and put my pertinent medical info on a card and laminated it. I carry it in my wallet in case I ever need it.

Wow thats awesome info. I would just like to add that if you are ever in this country do not worry about the emergency number Most of you on here will know 911 as your emergency number ours is 999 but 911 also works here and puts you through to our emergency services.
