Take it from a pro, leave the wetsanding to us! On most trucks, wetsanding is totally unnecessary unless you have some really bad orange peel or runs (which you should check for before you buy.

Follow the basic steps of:
  1. Clay
  2. Compound
  3. Polish
  4. Sealant and/or Wax
and you should be good. Of course, proper wash techniques will keep you from having to cut and polish in the future. I'm currently writing an article on this for my blog. I'll keep the forum updated on that.

I read that washing after the clay bar is a good idea to take off any bits of clay or loose dirt that may be left behind.

Between this thread and one or two more I've seen different versions of the final steps in detailing progression. A couple of places say Wax then Polish and some others say Polish then Wax. Thought I knew what I was supposed to do and believe one version is a mis-speak so to say. What is the proper method?

I've been confused by the whole polish and wax terms. From what I've read on other sites, you polish first and then wax. But then when you look at some products like the Turtle Wax "ICE" they call it a polish on the box when in fact it is a one step wax.

And if you look something like the California Gold line from Mother's, they have a 3 step that's a polish, glaze, and then wax.

Always polish then wax. The polish brings out the shine by filling fine surface flaws and the wax protects the finish.

I just washed and dried then applied the clay bar. HOLY S***. That clay bar system is awesome. I also waxed afterward and the shine and feel on that paint is awesome.

Which clay bar did you use and did you need just one bar or two to do the truck?

Meguiar's smooth surface clay kit. Comes with (2) 4 oz.clay bars, spray, small bottle of wax, and a microfiber towel. Got it at Auto Zone for about $18.00. If you have waxed before, you can get away using only 1 bar.
