Default Intake ?....

After seeing all the DIY intakes im going to try something.Simply removing the intake box off the end of the flex pipe and strapping on an air filter or possibly trying the pvc idea i saw in another thread...my question...is there any adverse affect to this and also does the size of the breather filter for the valve cover hose matter?Ive noticed advance auto has some that are smaller and one huge one then the shiny ones which seem to be sort of meduim sized...any help would be great

The larger the size of the filter usually the better, because it can filter more air and let more air in. The biggest things to worry about when doing your own intake is #1, getting fresh/cool air. You want to position the filter so it is taking cold air from the outside, not the air from the engine bay (hot air). Cool air = more power. #2. Try to get as few bends as possible with your piping. The less bends you have the more laminar your air flow will be which is better. More bends makes turbulent air flow and it won't mix with the fuel as well. Do a search on DIY intake and you'll find lots of examples.
