Default 2002 diesel 3500 4wd auto: new howl

I just got a howl while in 4wd, sounds like a ring/pinion mis-alignment. Just started while in 4wd on icy roads. pull it back to 2wd it goes away. put it back in 4wd within 100 or 200 feet it is back. drive train is stock & never been USED hard. 116000 miles. Should I be looking at the tansfer case or the front R&P. No vibration "YET' but it has only gone 15 miles with the new noise
Any sugestions as where to start looking would be welcomed.
