My dept is all volunteer and we run fire/rescue and BLS; EMS responds too but we always get there before they do, EMS always runs ALS crews. We have between 350-400 runs a year in our small community and we are area is anywhere from 10-20 miles from the EMS station, so we can keep somebody alive until the ambulance personnel arrive!

In Toronto they recently started discussing merging the Fire and EMS services in an attempt to safe cash as the city is deep in the red. Without getting too far into it, it didn't go over well. In my city these two departments don't exactly get along, however it does provide for some timely comic relief when I'm on scene with both and they are each making cracks about each other to me.

Hell, the city even discussed laying of police, which is against provincial legislations here. In other words it's illegal. So I don't ever see Fire and EMS merging.

Here in my small 3.3 square mile Village and Town we run about 700-900 calls a year fire only. We have 9 seperate companies with 7 fire houses. We run 6 engines 2 aerials 1 stick 1 tower and a heavy rescue. We have over 500 active volunteers and going into our 200th year of service in 2012. My company alone sits at the southside of the village housing 1 engine with 60 active volunteers. I am currently 2nd lieutenant out of there. We cover all of the southside of the town which includes commerical industrial and resdential including section 8 houseing and high rises, we also are first due engine into the historic Sing Sing Correctional Facility if needed.

I am a fireifghter/Medic here in Memphis, tn. we run on both Fire and all EMS calls. Medics usually rotate 12hrs/12hrs between the fire equipment and ambulance. we staff 55 engine companies and nearly 30 trucks, 3 heavy rescues and 33 ALS ambulances. Last year we responded to over 130,000 calls city wide.

We have Fire and EMS together...run approx 20,000 calls a year with just over 87% EMS calls. In summer, our population is around 7,000 and in the winter, we tend to run around 20,000.

My departments are kind of unique I think ...

I work for an ambulance service as a Paramedic / Lieutenant with over 12 years of EMS experience. Our primary obligation is 24/7 ALS EMS coverage.

Within the past year, my EMS service placed an ambulance in the local volunteer fire department and we staff it on daylight shift due to lack of volunteer response. The EMS personnel are obviously cross-trained in fire and rescue. That specific ambulance has a set of rescue tools, cribbing, farm jacks, SCBA's, etc. That station also has an engine. So, if the incident is fire related, the crew staffs the engine. If there is a medical call that they are closer to than our main station or if it is a vehicle accident, they staff the ambulance.

So far the system is working good for our area since, as we all know, volunteerism is unfortunately going out the window.

Outside of the affiliation with the ambulance service, I am also the assistant EMS coordinator and safety officer for the fire department.

But back to the EMS side ... We are a privately operated non-profit with 6 ambulances, 3 squads, a support vehicle, the MERV (see below), an ATV, and 3 boats. We have a Search Team with dogs, a Water Rescue team, and an active Support/Firefighter Rehab division. We recently began training to develop a Tactical EMS team.

Last summer, our service received a Mass Evacuation and Rehab bus built by Sartin Services in North Carolina. The "MERV" is capable of transporting 18 bed-confined patients, or 24 seated patients at one time. We have wireless EKG/vital sign monitoring so that all patients can be monitored from the command area while moving. The vehicle also can function to provide large scale firefighter rehab at larger incidents. Among many others things. The basic concept for the vehicle as far as mass transport has been around for a while, but our specific vehicle with all of the diverse functions was designed in house by our chief and some of our members. We are very happy with the truck and has served us well already.

We provide fire services......EMS in operated by the town and we respond if they need us and call for our assistance. Our EMS though is strickly medical only, we handle Jaws calls and just about everything else. ALot of guys in our fire distrcit become EMT's on their own and get funded by the district for the class.
