I really don't understand why tailgates don't come with locks from the factory. Then again I also wondered why the towing packages from years ago didn't have trailer brake controllers installed.

I've got a topper that locks, but it probably isn't that much of a deterrent to someone who really wants it. Can someone post some sources?

Honestly, locks are just to keep the honest people honest. If you don't know how to pick locks (which can be done in a couple seconds if you do), a portable drill with a bit, 30 seconds, and the lock becomes redundant. Locks also make a theif move on to an easier target as well...so yes it is a good idea to get a tailgate lock.

I understand the scrap value of a tailgate, but I figure mine is not in that great of shape so that by itself should keep the sticky-fingers away. Besides, all the scrap yards around here photocopy your drivers license, video tape you and your vehicle, and take pictures of your license plate. We had quite the spell around here when people were cutting down aluminum light poles (the tall ones you see in parking lots) and turning them into cash.

I would do it if I were you. I haven't done it to either of my trucks but I plan to do it shortly. My vehicles are very well secured and protected by Roofers Rage so I never felt worried about someone taking off with my stuff, but you can never be too safe.

A tailgate lock was the first mod done to mine. Of course, I was a victim of tailgate theft in the past, and knowing how easy and quick it is to perform, I'm all too enthusiastic to slow a thief down.

Yes, yes, I know locks only keep honest folks honest, but really, what I would be concerned about is the casual thief who isn't gonna spend a lot of time trying to drill out the lock on my 'gate. The thief tries it, sees it's locked, and moves on. Lock serves it's purpose.

I had the lock and the power conversion installed on mine.

I hadn't thought about the tailgate stealing thing; not around here anyway.

I think it should've been a standard on mine.

Its amazing that we actually have to worry about someone coming up and stealing our tailgate. I'm loosing faith in humanity, after reading the thread I dont think its such a bad idea and would consider putting it on my truck too, better safe than sorry and especially for 35 bucks. I mean geez they even have the locking gas caps too. When gas prices soared you heard about people stealing your gas all the time! WTH is wrong with people!
