Default New Exhaust - spare tire issue (noob says hi)

Posted 21 January 2010 01:23 PM
Just joined and this is my first post. So, hello to everyone.

I just installed a new Gibson cat-back exhaust on my truck. I have the 20" factory wheels and spare tire. This exhaust is a single in, dual out with both pipes exiting behind the passenger side rear tire. I bought this system because the similar system that exits on each side behind the tire specifically said I would have to relocated my spare tire in order to install it. I didn't want to do that. Well, with this kit, my spare is still too close to one of the pipes. They recommend at least 1" clearance from the spare, shocks, brake lines, etc. I'm clear on everything except the tire. I've contacted Gibson and all they can recommend is to find a way to move the spare tire over an inch from the stock location. I can't figure out a way to do that. Does anybody have any suggestions?

You could try going to an Exhaust shop that does custom work. They may be able to bent the exhaust pipe enough to give you the clearance that you need.

You could also wrap the exhaust in a thermal blanket so you don't have issues with heat around your spare.

I came across this thread by mistake but its interesting. I just purchased a Magnaflow system and the guy asked me what year it was. he told me after 2003 the exhaust wouldnt work because of the spare tire. I was fortunate enough to be at the right time / right place. Guy bought it wasnt load enough. I had the truck it would fit.Funny how yours is like that or no one said anything????????????????????????????????????

I have my issue worked out. But, after talking with Gibson tech support, it turns out that the truck they R&D'd this exhaust with just happened to have 17" wheels. Fortunately everything fits enough that it all goes under there, it's just that the tire is too close to the driver's side pipe. I bought an exhaust header wrap kit and wrapped the pipe twice well before and after the point where the 2 are closest together. Before, after getting out of the truck, I could touch the pipe but not hold my finger or hand on it more than a second. With the wrap, I can grab the pipe with my hand and hold it there just after driving the crap out of the truck. Been running it that way for several weeks now and have checked the tire a few times and all appears okay. Apparently, the R&D truck used with Gibson's Dual Extreme system had 20" wheels because, on those install instructions, it specfically states that the spare tire will have to be relocated to run that exhaust. I'm very happy with the look and sound of my dual sport system.
