Default Decisions Decisions

Well! Decisions, decisions. My '08 Ram 3500 Cummins has been running smoothly for the last month or so. It's running like the way it should have been since I bought it new. But the dreaded thought of it failing again hasn't cleared my mind just yet. I know I will never recover the money I lost from all the downtime I had with it being repaired at the numerous dealerships I brought it to. Thankfully it'll be paid for by the end of this month. That leaves me with an opportunity to trade it in for the 2011 Ford SuperDuty. I have a strong feeling that the new SuperDuty would be one hell of a truck, might even possibly put the Duramax and Cummins to shame. But the dealer said it won't be coming in for a while yet, and I really can't wait for something new. So the other opportunity is to keep the my '08 Ram 3500 Cummins and pick up a new 2010 Ram 1500 Hemi. At first I didn't really dig the look for the new truck, but it grew on me. And the interior looks absolutely fabulous, especially with the floor mounted shift. If I take this route then I'll have three trucks for work, and since I landed a huge contract today I can definitely make use of a third truck.

So, what am I to do? Trade in the Cummins for a SuperDuty, or keep the Cummins and buy another Hemi? Well, I decided on neither. I'll add another car my personal collection. Here it is, a 2006 Audi A4 Avant 2.0 Turbo with a 6-Speed Tiptronic.

I knew I could always use a wagon. My 2000 Audi A6 is a sedan and even with the seats folded down doesn't have the same cargo capacity as this A4 Avant. The way it drives is far more exciting than my A6, despite the fact that my A6 has tremendous gobs of torque from it's supercharged V-6. This little A4 Avant has a decent engine, although a little rough and noisy compared to the very well refined V-6 in my A6. Also, being a turbo it has very noticeable turbo lag below 2500RPM. It's engine's downsides aside, it is mated to an absolutely fantastic gearbox. A 6-Speed Tiptronic with Dynamic Sport Mode. You can use it like a normal Tiptronic and shift the gears manually, or you just slap it into Sport and it'll shift almost at redline and hold gears in the engine's sweet spot to make use of the torque. This little A4 Avant also sits a lot lower than my A6, and it weighs far less, making it very nimble despite having stock suspension, wheels and tires. It has a decent wheelbase that gives it a comfortable ride but it's turning radius is very tight, almost as tight as the BMW 3-Series. It's power steering is also a lot more driver oriented than the vague feeling in my A6, and unlike my A6 it is speed sensitive. The interior is typical Audi, very well refined with materials and build quality you would never see in a domestic vehicle. The front seats are heated like my A6, although the rear seats aren't. However, unlike my A6, it has a 6-disc CD changer built into the dash. The streets were dry so I was unable to test the Quattro AWD, but this version of the Quattro AWD is far better than the one found on my A6. This is 70/30 rear bias, while my A6 has a 60/40 rear bias.

Overall this is a fabulous car and after the test drive I knew this was my next car. So, too bad for Ford, and too bad for Chrysler 'cause this time Audi wins again.

Mods to come include an RS4 carbon fibre trim, PES ECM upgrade and a CAI.

Badass car man. I admire audi's, they are just sheer precision vehicles.

Ok, so you kept the cummins and got the Audi as well? The Audis are nice vehicles... just too low to the ground for me

Thanks! Yeah, it's a great car. Once you go with a European vehicle everything else seems like junk. They're expensive, but they lack two things that American and Japanese manufacturers don't have. Number one is the build quality, compared to the American vehicles is simply beyond comparison. And number two is the driving experience compared to Japanese vehicles is top notch. European cars are simply so much fun to drive, so well put together they pretty much set a standard for everyone else to follow. If it's one downside to owning a European vehicle, is that they are high maintenance, expensive to maintain and not nearly as easy to work on as American or Japanese vehicles. But this little rocket is a cool ride and so versatile. I wish I can drive this to work but I do need something to hold up my ladders and to tow my tool trailer. A little 200HP I-4 can't do that. As far as audio upgrades, I know very little about car audio/video, but it has a 10-speaker Bose system. I don't know how many watts it produces but it definitely pounds.

I'm going to keep the Cummins for now. I want to see the SuperDuty when it comes out and then I'll decide on whether or not I should switch to a Ford. With this new contract my company landed, we'll be busy for the entire summer. If I need another truck then I'm just going to have to tough it out until I can buy another next year. With the way things are, if I do purchase another half-tonne truck it'll definitely be a Dodge.

Incognito! You should be ashamed of yourself.....contemplating getting rid of the Cummins! Oh, my heart......say it ain't so! I don't know of all your troubles with her, but I LOVE MINE and haven't had a lick of trouble! Oh, I am going to need a stiff drink when this all settles in!
