Default Programming a keyfob?

I think I've read where, if you lose a keyfob, so you only have one (or none) and have to get a new one, programming the truck to recognize it is something you have to go to the dealer for.

But, that suggests that, if I have 2 working keyfobs and get a 3rd, programming it to work with the truck is something I could do myself.

Is that true?

If so, it seems like it might be a good idea to go ahead and get a 3rd keyfob now, so if/when I lose or smash one, I won't be on the hook for a big bill with my dealer.

How much does a new keyfob cost?

Here is the site I checked out when I thought I had lost my key

http://www.keyless-remotes.com/Categ...009:Ram+Pickup

Not sure if you have both keys if you can program the 3rd yourself.

What year and model? I'll see what I can find out but I'm thinking you can do it yourself.

BlueJet,

I don't think I trust that site. It says that the key for my '09 is the same as for '07 - '08.

I thought the 4th Gen Ram keys were different than the 3rd Gen. The picture it has on there definitely would not work in my truck.

For your trim level, you are correct. The key on the base model Rams are the same as the older ones but you have a FOBIK that is different. I checked and can not find a way for the customer to program their own key with the style you have.

Aha. Thanks, Randy. In that case, I guess there's no reason for me to pre-emptively get a 3rd key. I'll just wait until when/if I lose or smash one.

Don't blame you. By the time it's said and done you're looking at close to $200.

Just thought I'd throw in something I found from my experience. I'm having a Viper alarm put in and didn't want to carry two remotes. I bought some chipped but non-Fobik keys from a guy on ebay (Saveonkeys.net), and had them all programmed and cut. I now have a "regular" key that unlocks the door/tailgate and ALSO works in the ignition. I DID have to go to the dealer for programming, as they removed the "Customer Learn" mode from the Rams in 2008, so no programming extra keys yourself...

Good luck!
