Default Hitch question

I know this is a broad question regarding my 09 1500 with hitch (just retired my 1996 Ram 1500 with 150k miles). My last truck did not have a hitch and the few times I needed it just never warranted getting one installed.

I don't have a boat or anything to tow but thought about buying a hitch just to keep in the truck in the event I would need it.

Is there a standard "drop" or anything else I should know about before buying one for this truck.

I hope this one gives me 12+ years of use. I love this thing the more I drive it!!!

Thanks in advance.
Gus

Pretty much all of the Rams that come it at the shop have between 2-4" drop hitches.

What you really need to know is the height range of the trailer you might be towing. Based on your post you can't know that information. However when I was calling around to rent a trailer last month I found that most rental trailer required the hitch to be 14"-22" above the ground. 12" was the lowest minimum I heard and 22" was the normal max for every place I called.

My Ram has the back bumper right at 22" (I have the 17" rims) so I was right at the max. I bought the Mopar hitch receiver that mount just under the bumper (drops the mounting point about 3"-4" bellow the bumper) and a hitch with 2" of drop. This combo resulted in the trailer mounting almost perfectly level and towed great. Assuming you have a similar set up (I assume you do as we both have 2009's) I think this setup would serve you well. The whole thing cost me about $150-$160 total and now I'm set for the future.

My truck already has the factory hitch receiver and the bottom of the bumper measures 22" from the ground.

Does anyone know if I would be safe with either a 2" or 4" drop or could this make a big difference if I ever come to use it?

Thanks...

It all depends on your trailer. You might even need a 6" or 8" drop. My trailer requires a 6" drop.

I would just wait until you need to tow and see what size works as there are too many variables. Heck, if you are borrowing or renting the trailer, they would probably have what you need anyway. Just borrow or rent the needed ball mount also.
