Default No Low Beams - High Beam position gives Low Beams

Howdy all,

I am the new owner of a 1999 Ram 1500. It came with a couple small problems, one of which is with the headlights.

When the headlight switch is in the "On" position, and the High Beam switch on the column is in the "Low Beam" position, the headlights do not function. When I switch on the High Beams with the High Beam switch, the headlights function, but are at Low Beam Brightness.

I have done some basic troubleshooting in looking at the pertinent fuses in the cab and the engine bay, and they are all in good, working order.

If this sounds like a familiar situation, or if you have a good place for me to start, I would love some input.

Thanks a lot!

Dave

Are you positive the head lights are only in low beam when you put them in high position. You could have two bad bulbs that only work in high. Another thing to check is the multifunction switch it could be bad. That is the lever in the column for the blinkers and high beam low beam. They do weird things when they go.

I'm definitely not going to rule out the weird chance that I do have two bad bulbs in the headlights. I am judging that they are in low beam in comparison to a buddy's 97 Ram. I was just trying to get a little more input before I purchase a new set of bulbs and try them out.

There doesn't seem to be any other issues with the multifunction switch, the wipers and sprayer work just fine. Would the multifunction switch from a '97 swap into the '99, for troubleshooting purposes?

The multifunction switch in the '99 model doesn't work like the multiplexed switches found in the DR/DS series rams. The BR/BE Rams use a traditional switch. The diagram below should help with your diagnosis and I do belive the '97 switch should work for testing purposes.
