Default Oil loss/coolant

First off, I want to say hellow from Southeast Missouri! And Thanks in advance for this site!

I am not a mechanic (unless shade tree counts). I am forced to do my own repairs because of tight budget.

Ok, I have a 99 Ram 4x4 Sport with 5.9 and 174k milage. I have noticed a white film on my oil fill cap. Also I use oil like crazy (no smoke at all). I have tried to gather as much info as possible before doing anything so here is what I know. Cyl 3 4 and 8 55-60 lbs compression. Rest of cyl 100-120 compression. 20" of vacuum. Have not done a leak down test. Am I looking at just a manifold problem or worse?

Again, thanks for helping.

Ok, a little more info, thanks to a post I found on here.

I just went out and pulled the air cleaner and looked in the throttle body. I can see an oil film inside and maybe a small amount of sludge (some kind of crap) inside. Also the same milky oil/coolant in the pcv valve and hose.

I am pretty sure the intake manifold gasket is gone, but the compression has me bothered. I do not have the funds for a total rebuild so I have to "just fix what is broke".

You should perform a leakdown test to see where it's going. Sounds like you may wind up pulling both heads off though.

On the leak down test, I have read about it, but not sure how to do it, and no one around my area has one. We are very "back woods" here.

How did the plugs look that came out of the 2 low compression holes ? Really once you have the intake off it's not a whole lot more work to pull the heads . But you need to know if the rings are ok . Thats where a leak down test comes in .

All the plugs looked normal. I replaced all of them when I did the compression test. I could not tell a difference between them.

Can I build a leak down tester? No one here really even knows what I am talking about. Autozone said "a what"?

I have an air compressor at work and also compressed dry nitrogen.
