Default Just bought a 2001 quad cab 5.2 PROBLEMS!!!

Hey everyone, new to the site and just wanted to let everyone know what i got. Live in the valley in TX, and went to Houston 2 weeks ago, came back with a big bad 2001 Dodge ram. It is black, (4)door sport model. It has the 5.2 auto and looks great. Runs great... (while i was in Houston) lol.

Ok so problems start when i get the Truck back home.

Got to Houston in my 2008 dodge avenger, bought my truck up there and rented a u-haul to pull my car back. truck ran good, loved everything about it, pulled the car dolley loaded like as if nothing. everything was perfect..... Then......
i got to a town called Falfurrias 1 hr away from home.(took it all the way with the O/D turned off)

First the check engine light turned on,.... i decided to have it diagnosed at autozone later in the wk. then 2 days later i go to school and i floor it on the way over there... truck picked up speed awesome i was surprised. get to school,... *learn* lol and then when it was time to go home the truck would get stuck in first gear and wouldn't jump out till 3800rpms or till i romped or floored the truck and let off it would shift. the other shifts are usually good but the first to second is the worse.
took it to autozone and the check engine light code was for TCC Transmission Solenoid

so don't know what to do or what to buy.... i decided to reset the battery and i bought a bottle of transx for the tranny... transmission is doing a lot better,, and usually shifts good but i have to keep the rpms under 2k.

any ideas?

also the other day it started smoking for no reason... then it just stopped.
weird truck.

its a 2001 5.2 with 120k miles.

thanx and any help would be greatly appreciated..
while in houston before i got home i put lucas fuel treatment, also i got 13mpgs on the way home pulling my car back,... and after 2 weeks of driving it w/0 trailer i still avg 13 mpgs???? damn that is too much of a gas guzzler for me. First truck owner also so... is this normal?
i changed the oil and air filter in houston before i came back and tires are fully inflated to 35psi and i have a light foot.

sorry for such a long post hahahah. thanx guys

TCC faults are common. Call a dealer to find out what needs to be done to replace the TCC solenoid.

My '99 with the 5.2 and auto trans never threw this code so I'm sorry I can't be more help than that.

The late 1-2 shift could be a burned out 2nd gear . Tcc solenoid shouldn't effect that . Smokin ? Could be the typical intake plenum gasket gone bad , anything leaking externally and hitting the exhaust , trans overheating and boiling out the trans vent . Kinda hard to diagnose something like this over the net .

Sorry you are having problems with the truck already! Ill start off by saying that I do not know alot about the Transmission probs. I would try and talk to a mechanic about it before anything else. 2nd I do know that 13mpg is about right. I get 11-13 PERIOD. Interstate, around town, flooring it, babying it. 11-13 thats it.

come to think of it tom... i forgot to mention that also the day it was smoking i was coming home from school and right as i pulled up into my neighborhood the trans temp light came on. parked the truck and i got underneath and the transmission smelled funny (burn) and was just about steaming, but not quite. as far as the intake plenum gasket... i have no idea. and as far as the mpg... wow that sucks... my 08 avenger gets 26! lol.

what exactly is TCC? and as far as the solenoids i found some online at a really good price,..Governor Pressure Solenoid 2000 and up Ram
$49.96 Best Buy - http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/...-000053396.htm
Governor Pressure Sensor 2000 and up Ram
$44.09 Best Buy -
http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/...-00053397a.htm
OverDrive and Lock up Solenoid Set for 2000 and up Ram
$54.00 Best Buy - http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/...-00053392d.htm

i can also buy the replacement transmission fluid (ATF+4 i think) and the transmission gasket and the gasket that goes between tranny and engine for another 100 bucks.

i have a friend who will charge 400 for labor... plus the 150 for solenoid/sensors and another 100 for the gaskets and fluid...

so about 700... would that be a good price? how about just rebuilding?
or how about scrapping the tranny and getting a better one? any price ideas?

tranny has been actin normal... such a weird truck hhahah. i guess the transx transmission additive helped out. sometimes i have to let off to get it to shift into 3rd or 4th... but it doesn't hit the trans temp light on anymore, and i haven't had a check engine light turn on.... so i dunno.... but i do know i need to replace the ball joints... upper/lower and both sides. :/ damn... sounds like my truck is a old squeaky bed. :P

I can tell you one thing. Those trucks are terribly common for transmission govenor pressure sensors and solonoids. I'm a chrysler mechanic and bak when those trucks were common to come in we changed them weekly for similar issues. They are dead simple to change and not ussually to expensive. The TCC solonoid however isn't all that common and I can't see causeing that issue. Another issue I have ran into which is unlikely your trouble is the intermediate band gets worn out and out of adjustment and can cause a delayed one-two shift. Some time's the band get's so far out of adjustment the actuator rod falls out and you get absolutely no second gear.
