Default New project

Hi everyone:

Due in large part to the project that CdnoilRam just completed, and because they look pretty cool in the wife's Challenger. I've decided to undertake something similar. I'm adding blue LEDs above the (inside) door handles.

I haven't quite gathered all of what I'll need, but hope to have everything I need by tomorrow. I'll also try to do a write up on it, along with pics as I go along. (Hopefully they'll be better pics than what I've got below).

I picked up a set of strip LEDs, that are designed to be hard wired. They even came with a "push to test" button, so you can see what they look like lit up. They were $14.99 at AutoZone

Here they are lit up, though it's hard to see, due to the glare.

I'll update when I actually start the project. Hopefully the weather will cooperate tomorrow AND I won't have to go to work. (working on call 24/7 really sucks when you're trying to get something done!)

Good luck with everything! That should look sweet when it's done.

someone told me that if I didn't have pics, then this never happened! Well there will be lots of pics.

list of tools:
10mm socket, short extention, rachet (I used 3/8" drive)
flat head screw driver (probably a large one and a smallish one)
phillips head screw driver
wire cutters
wire crimpers
needle nosed pliers
electrical tape
supplies needed:
LED light strip
about 40ft wire (I used 16 ga)
ring terminals (4 or 5 for ground)
quick connectors (2 per light) so that door panels can still be removed
in line wire splice connectors (I used 3)
fused cigarette lighter adapter for power (this can be done differently)

I'm only writing up the drivers' side. The passenger goes pretty much the same way

The door panel on the front is pretty easy to get off. You'll need the 10mm socket to remove the inside handle, then there are 4 phillips screws (2 along the bottom, 1 by the inside door handle, 1 on the upright by the mirror)

Once the screws are removed, simply gently lift the panel off.

Running the wires for the lights was a little tricky, as I couldn't find a good place to get them through. The harness was too tight to add to it, so I used a grommet that was below where the "regular" harness enters the body of the truck, then was able to squeeze into the factory harness where it enters the door.

When running the wires inside the door, you'll need to remove the speaker to gain access, unless you want to remove the white plastic (I didn't). I grounded the front lights on one of the screws for the speaker. I ran both wires along the harness for the windows and mirror control.

There isn't much involved in prepping and mounting the light strips. will need to drill a small hole (just small enough to pass the wires through) (sorry poor picture quality)

Then mount the light strip (I cleaned the surface with an alcohol wipe)(again poor picture quality)

Reinstall the panel, pulling the wires up through the hole for the window/ mirror controls. Once panel is reinstalled, connect the wires.

I didn't take a pic of the rear panel before or after I removed it (I know, bad me!). The speaker will need to be removed here too in order to gain access. You can see where there is a bolt (I think it holds the assembly for the lock) that I used for my ground on the rear

I was able to get under the harness/plug that enters the truck body for the rear, then poked a small hole in the harness to get the wire into the door

Prep for the lights on the panel is similar to the front. Drill a small hole, prep the surface then install

Running the wires a bit of a bugger. The interior trim panel (the one that the seat belt runs through) has no easy/good way of removing or getting it out of the way. I simply pulled (and cussed) until I got the access that I needed. This was probably the hardest part. (I was too POed to get pics, sorry!)

I ran the wire(s) under the carpet pretty much the entire time. I ran 1 continuous wire from the LR to the RR, tapping into this wire for the LF, RF, and power.

Once the panel is put back together, you can't even tell it was all ripped apart

I've got my radar detector power cord run under the dash, along with an extension so that it'll reach. When I reached the point where I was ready to add power, I was pretty much ready to finish and be done with it all. I took the easy way out, as I wasn't sure how to get my dash apart (center portion). I installed a 2-way splitter for 12V extension cable, then fitted a 12V plug on the end of the wire I tapped in to the lights with. I then plugged these together, and presto let there be light! the top is my radar detector, the bottom is the lights. This is all hidden by the kick plate in the passenger foot well.

Looks great Exco! Funnily enough, I ran my wires through the same places you did, save me putting my LEDs behind my door handle. I pulled the rear wiring sleeve and ran through rather than pierce the sleeve (was a bitch to do); but the front was run through the same hole.

thanks everyone. It ended up being a more extensive project than I initially thought it would be. I was sort of strapped for time when I wrote everything up (I had gotten called out to go to work shortly after I started the write up, so I sort of rushed through it)

When I got to work last night, I took some pics while it was dark!

Here is the left front. I achieved the results I was hoping for.

Here's the left rear. It's a little brighter than I had planned for, gonna look into toning it down a bit.
