Default 89 Octane

So today I put pretty much an entire tank of 89 octane in my
truck. I mistakenly put it in because itwas the same
price. I don't have a chip/programmer, the engine is completely stock. I believe octane rating is a fuels resistence
to premature combustion. I feel like my engine is idling a little bit rougher. Could this be true? And is this hurting my engine?

Thanks guys

i dont know if this is true but i heard that on some engines you should run mid grade gas in them once in awhile

You should be fine with 89 if you're running a stock engine. Mostly you need to run higher octane if you've got a programmer. If you're worried about it, just fill up at a half tank with 91 then go back to your usual octane rating.

Thanks guys. I wasnt TOO worried, just something I had been wondering about also. Hopefully a Superchips is in my near future, and then I can fill up with 92 and be tearing up the road!

all 89 octane is, is 87 and 91/2/3 mixed.

I work at a BP station, and thats how we do it...it just mixes right at the pump, and into your tank.

So, no, it won't hurt anything...and, if you put half a tank of 93 in there...you'd end up with something like 91 octane or something.

And, your right, the higher the octane, the less prone to pinging (preignition). Also will make it run cooler as well.

Also...not really relavent here, but, if you run leaded gasoline in a car (110 octane CAM2 from sunoco)...and you put half a tank of that, and half a tank of unleaded 93...the leaded and unleaded properties actually mix and you end up with an octane higher then 110. Crazy stuff...but, can save you money and help with performance.

As people are answering fuel questions I have one:

I run a '99 318 (Completely stock) with 186,000 miles. I run the cheapest grade of fuel so far and stick in some fuel system cleaner every so often.

Other than servicing her regularly should I do anything else? Should I run higher octane every now and then and is the fuel system cleaner stuff ok or will it perish seals and such on an older truck?

I usually run 87 in mine with Superchips set on economy. No problems, and most of my trips are way less than 5 miles. I'm pretty sure the manual doesn't recommend anything higher unless you are having problems. I do run some Seafoam or Lucas through every 3-5K miles. Just don't overdo it.
