Default A True Headlight Restoration...

I don't know if anybody else has done or even thought about doing this, but my headlights are so cloudy because the clear coat has peeled off. I have tried pretty much ever restore thingy for headlights out there. Now, what I'm thinking about doing is wet sanding the lights down starting at 400, 600, 800, 1000 grit sand paper. Then reshooting the lights with a clear coat. Like I said I have never done this before, so I'm going to try it on my fog lights first just to see how it turns out, cause they are pretty bad also, and those are cheaper to replace lol. The whole point is not spending a lot of money haha. And they are sport lights so they are the clear ones, and thus more expensive . Oh and I will try to post some pics as I go along. But let me know what you guys think, or if your or someone you know has tried this.

This seems like cool idea, my dad had talked about doing this on my moms van they are really bad.

Ya, I want to get aftermarket headlights but trying to find some that fit the sport model is a pain!!!! But oh well.

I think you are on the right track with this process. Remove the old clearcoat (I've seen peeling ones before), then fine sand and finally finish sand, then clear over that. Just be stingy with the new clear or it will cloud up the headlights.

There are kits out there that supply you with the wet sand paper and a plastic polish . I think the final wet sand was with 2000 grit . Remember the finer the finish the better the final product .

I have tried those. They aren't working for me because my Clear is gone on my headlights, so it litterly last for about 3 days, and its back to normal. Its like tying to polish a hood with no clear coat, it just doesn't work. But before I tackle my headlights I'm trying the same method with the Night Shades on a spare 3rd brake light, also taking pics so if it turns out good I can post that walk through. Plus on top of it im living in an appartment hopefully for only another month or so, so its hard to shoot paint off my balcany lol.

I wouldn't go with less than about 1000 grit on plastic to begin with, start with a finer paper, if it is not aggressive enough then move to a more coarse paper. Make sure you pre-soak the paper and keep it well lubricated while sanding. I usually use 3" buffing pads on my rotary polisher that I got at the body shop supply, most of the kits come with a selection of foam and wool pads and a backing plate that will work with a polisher and have an adapter to use with a drill etc. To remove the sanding marks I usually use a medium-fine cut polish, however since plastic doesn't conduct heat as well as metal surfaces make sure you don't polish too long or you may burn the surface of the lens. Once most of the scratches have been removed I use a swirl remover or a plastic polish, the whole process isn't very different than polishing the paint.
