Default External Mic, 2010 U-Connect (non nav) head unit

Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to use an external Mic with a 2010 Ram 1500 head unit (the single disc mp3 one) as the dealer put in an aftermarket nav system and I'm wanting to install this unit in my brother's '06 Ram (no mic in his mirror).

I'm not an expert so I can't tell what the plugs on the back of the thing are for, nothing looks like any kind of mic jack I've seen for other audio equipment, so maybe it has to be spliced in to one of the clips somehow?

any help would be appreciated!

You need more then just a microphone. The radio does not have the Uconnect system built into it. The radio just houses the buttons. You have to install a Uconnect module and then a microphone has to be connected to that Uconnect module. But yes if you install the uconnect module you can put any microphone you want connected to it. To top it all off you can't just install a uconnect module, after it has been installed it has to be programed by the dealer before it will work.

oh and I'll add the only case this isn't true is with A mygig Nav radio (RER). The mygig nav has the uconnect module built into it and the microphone connect directly to the radio. The mygig nav is the only radio that this is true in. Even the mygig non Nav (REN) still uses an external Uconnect module.

on my last truck i had a hands free unit just for my cell phone came with a mic, it works thru most any radio & used the radios speakers when activated

but the same company makes all kinds of products for your vehicle, you may want to check out the website, the products are great

thanks for the replies... I should have known they'd want to nickle and dime you for the convenience

he's been looking at parrot products, I was just hoping I could help him out and solve his problem without spending money.. if I had the uconnect before the third party shop installed the aftermarket nav system, would it still be there somewhere? they left the head unit itself in the back seat.. maybe the module is still installed behind the dash somewhere (and.. dare to dream.. still programmed for the unit itself!)

The module will still be in the dash, but you would have no way to control it since the buttons are in the radio you took out.
