Timing chain?

Did they have MDS in 04?

If reworking the heads 'fixes' this, I'll be very suprised,,,,
What does "reworking the heads" even mean? Valve guides come on I don't see that. Surface the heads? If he blew a head gasket it would be puking water or oil and again seems unlikely at idle. MDS system maybe but the lifters are are in the block.

I would be demanding to see any parts replaced, this smells like something that's been in the fridge too long.

I'd be curious to see if the heads were actually off. Good way to buy time.

My Dads 2002 Dakota has the 4.7 in it and it was idiling rough. It would die as soon as he let go of the gas. We took it to the dealership and they couldn't find it. So i figured i'd check out the throtle body. Come to find out it was the IAC Valve (Idle Air Control). It has tons of carbon and gunk build up on it. I changed it and now it runs top notch. So maybe thats worth a shot?

No MDS in 04. I like the IAC valve theory, somewhat cheap in price and easy to replace. Not a mechanic so some of the other theorys I cant comment on. Good luck and let us know what happens.

Ok went to the dealer and the heads are off. There is also a collapsed valve spring!!!!!! Maybe chrysler was right? It will be finished Wednesday we shall see. Oh and the throttle body has been spit shined.

I agree. I actually call that dealership bulls**t. 'Cause back when I was at GM we would never remove the cylinder heads of a vehicle just for the problem that you described. That's a load of money to charge a customer to rip off the cylinder heads of an engine just 'cause it isn't idling right.
