Thumbs up Nitto Trail Grappler Review!

So I stuck with the factory 20s and went with the 295/65/20 Nitto Trail Grapplers.

Well they fit tight but work perfectly.....in forward gears. Due to the sidewall lugs on the inside the upper control arms rub in reverse with the wheels cut too sharp. I'm making it work until my machinist buddy can fab me some spacers with a "faux hub". I found out from my local off road specialist that the factory 20s are hub-centric and over 60 you get a bit of a shimmy with a regular spacer. I think we're going to go with a 1/4" spacer...maybe 3/8". I'm seriously considering trying the centramatic wheel balancers. They are saying treadlife increases of 40-50%. This is the same type of system that tractor/trailer rigs use to get 200K out of steer tires.

So about the tires. First of all, they LOOK impressive. They have an old school look with some new twists and turns. They are sure to get you noticed. My Region Leader (Edward Jones) had hardly EVER noticed my truck until he saw it with the new tires yesterday and then he couldn't stay quiet about it. I told him it gave me credibility in my little farm towns. The tires look like a modified/updated Buckshot . I've got mine mounted with the block lettering and flat butresses on the visible side.

Performance on-road, well I can tell it's a MT. You get the lug/tread slap at low speeds. If feels very...bitey! lol At highway speeds you get a good bit of whine/hum. Not anything like the old Bias-Ply Co-Op Gripspurs but not too quiet either!

Performance off-road, well I'm VERY pleased. I helped my neighbor's kids get one of their horses this afternoon. With the old HP Goodyears I'd have been more worried having almost gotten stuck MULTIPLE times in very mild mud and marshiness. Well this time I was prepared and when I took off through the low part of the pasture it was so much easier, and when I lost momentum I needed minimum wheel spin to clean the tread and get me back up to speed. My dad was thoroughly impressed after that figuring I'd have had a much harder time or gotten stuck altogether. The best part was crossing the creek. When the front end got up on the opposite bank and we lost speed I hit it hard and those tires were like a ditch-witch going to work. and I dug my way up and out! From there we found the horse and I went out another gate and got the cattle trailer pulled it back through the field with no incident and took the horse home.

Bottom line....3 days and so far with dry pavement and soupy mud these tires really hold their own. I'm glad I went with them over the Goodyear MTs...due to size as well as the impressive cleaning ability Hope to have pics of my halfway clean truck tomorrow. BTW the 295/65 gave me about 2.5 inches of lift over the stock tires and they fill up the wheel wells nicely!

Well my truck looked pretty rough so I thought I'd clean it up a bit. The pics won't be it in the cleanest top form, but they'll be better than it's been since my avatar pic was taken.

Here's some pics from my phone though....

Tomorrow I'll grab one with decent light and a cleaner-er truck.

Thanks, here's the bigger pic, I didn't notice the last one was so small.

I was really impressed that I didn't have to do any back and forth "sawing" to pull myself on out that the straight line was fine.

After having the HPs thwart my fun, and work, intentions for so long it was time! I'm going tomorrow evening to see how much it actually dug out the creek bank.
