Default 1998 ram shackle rust with pics

I just bought this 1998 Dodge ram 1500 2wd 360 V8. It's in pretty good shape not much rust under it at all sheet metals all good but then this happened...

WTF? Anyone else have this problem? I haven't had this truck 2 weeks.... this better be the last stupid problem with this truck or im trading it off on a Toyota

Did you know the former owner ? Wonder if it was used for putting a boat in the water . If so even your Toyota couldn't resist that .

Looks like that plate that sourounds the shackle is a good place for water to stay. Good point Tom about the boat...........Sounds logical to me.

bought the truck locally they never pulled a boat..... I live in Illinois they use salt on the roads in the winter so some rust is to be expected. But the main areas I looked at like rockers and floor boards and frame all looked good for it being a 1998. Whatever steel they used to make the shackles out of is JUNK! I just ordered some replacements from mopar for $64 i didnt have another choice i dont want to lower it with aftermarket shackles.

Is that each or a pair.............Good to know that everything else underneath is good. I know about salt. Being in Ontario, Canada they use a wack of it.

No, it's not junk, it's STEEL. Even your vaunted Toyota uses the same STEEL, and when esposed to salt and moisture, would rust jus t as badly...because it's STEEL. Let this be a lesson for you, when buying a truck in a place known for rust, look at ALL the STEEL, not just the pretty parts. That shackle was going LONG before you got it, and you should have seen it.
