Default Serious Question:

Hi, I have a 2005 dodge 2500 diesel. I6, and a co-worker told me not to let it idle at normal rpm for too long, it will mess up the torgue converter and the tranny. Is there any truth to this? I have let my diesel idle for sometimes 30 minutes in cold weather to let it get warm. I cant afford a tranny for this thing. He told me if I was going to let it idle, to put the emergency brake on and turn the cruise control on with it in neutral and set it at about 1500 rpm. he said something about the torque converter doesnt get enough air at low rpm. can someone clarify this? any information appreciated.

I am curious as to the answer. When I used to drive trucks I would let the rig idle all night. Maybe there is a difference between big rig engines and full size truck diesel engines?

Sorry to interrupt....you just made me think about that is all!

wow never herd of this I think it BS ive havent herd any of the diesels with tranny problems but to make sure I ll call my bother in the morn.(hes a cummings cert. tech)and double check

Since when does a torque converter need air?

If they need air, why are they covered???

You'll also find that the cruise control won't function as an 'idle speed control', either,,,

I don't think this is an issue. Constant idling with the new emissions systems on the new truck causes problems with the soot capture system but not the trans or engine.

well, thanks for all of the replies. i did find out that the cruise control will not work as an idle up feature like the dude said it would. not happening. i will also call around and get what i can from the techs. i was always told that it was always better for a diesel to sit and idle verses stopping and starting the engine. it sounds like bs to me too.
