Im new to this forum and looking for opinions/info. Im currently in search of a 3rd gen 2500 4x4 5.9L I6. Ive found one that is in my price range. My specific question is what to look for when inspecting this vehicle? How many miles is to many miles for a 2005? Most importantly how many miles are YOU guys getting out of your trucks? Talkn odometer not MPG. Feel free to share your stories!

Some specifics on the vehicle that Im looking at are as follows.
-2005 2500 4 door 5.9L I6
-119,xxx miles.
-one owner, used to commute from eastern shore, md to baltimore,md.
-Being sold by dealer. They are asking $20k.

Thanks in advance to everyone!

Mileage isn't a factor . It depends on how well it's been taken care of up to this point . I'm sure the price is negotiable . Have you checked Kelley Blue Book for the value ?

Trust me price will go down! Is there any way that I can tell how well it may have been taken care of just by inspection?

See if theres any maintenance records with it . Are you buying it from a Dodge dealer ? If so check and see if it were serviced there and ask to see the records .

actually, the best way is to pay your own trusted mechanic to look it over with you, either where its at or his own shop, you don't have to be sneaky about it, your just being wise

Even though my 05's a hemi, not CTD it has 130,000 miles. I live on the coast of Maine and Maine is the worst state for salt on the roads, they even spray super concentrated brine before it snows. Yesterday I took her in for a front end inspection/alignment. The mechanic put it on the machine and said, it's perfect, "I couldn't possibly get it better"! Then he says " Look under your truck, no rust! All front end components are like new!" Then he says" Check this 05 2500 GMC, less miles rusty as hell, needs ball joints and inner tie rods." Made me happy to be driving a Ram! Just like you, I really would love to find an 05-07 4X4 QC Cummins for that kind of money! Any truck with 100,000 miles, I would inspect the front suspension for wear, even though the 2500 is simple and rugged. Make sure all fluids have been changed also. I would drop the transmission pan, if you see a pile of iron fillings on the magnet and or the fluid looks really dark and smells burnt, that would be a bad sign, but if it was used as easily as it sounds, she's a cream puff.

With that mileage I would check tie rods, ball joints, track bar... all that suspension on the front end. Also, run an ECU check and see what the codes are/were. The weak point in the 2005 can be some of the wiring/electrical components. Make sure the alignment is okay also. I agree with the post from Tom, maintenance is key. I think the price is too high, but I am in Texas. Check the KBB. Good luck and happy "dieseling"! My 2004 has 189K and my 1993 has 465K. These things last!
