It is ussually a long time coming. The seals do wear out and unfortunately they wear out within a short amount of mileage. Regular inspections of the seals and fluid levels can prevent major repairs. As long as it was a seal leak that lead to your problem. It may have been just the nut backing off, I have never seen it before but it is possible I guess.

The dealer fixed mine under waranty, so we never will know exactly 'what they found',,, Just hoping this isn't a 'regular' event....

Had a chevy 1 ton with the 'heavy' (?) rear end (hubs seperate from axles)

Right rear seal went out twice in 38,000 miles,,,

As it was then just out of warranty, I replaced it myself.

Shoot, the preload on the hub bearings on that side was so loose, the hub would 'clunk' back and forth,,, (You know what I mean!) The retainer was fine, the tech at the chevy dealer just set the preload way too loose when he replaced the seal the first time. (He also managed to cross thread a lug on the front spindle, too!!!)

I Re-used the same bearings and races, just put in a new seal and the correct preload.
No troubles whatsoever for the next 100,000 miles,,,, (Might still be going strong today, I don't have the truck anymore)

I have a great dislike for incompetent mechanics.

Thanks for your info, Cormacs!

Unfortunately there is a lot of people with tool boxes out there, just not very many mechanics. Trust me I know, I work with a few of them.

Rear ends are very picky. If you build them right, they will last forever. If you build them the slightest bit wrong it will not take long until there is a failure.

UPDATE:

I took my truck in for the pinion seal on Monday morning, they replaced the seal BUT told me that was NOT leaking in fact the Flange around the pinion is leaking!!
The tech said he fixed it but I should keep an eye on it?
HOW? The flange is part of the casting? Short of putting a new rear end in this truck I don't see how they'll fix this problem?

The truck leaves a puddle the size of a deck of cards everytime I park it

Well approximately 400kms later it's leaking again only Worse! Not even a full day since repair!

Truck is going back in today for another try

Not Impressed, brand new truck (6months old) and it has been pampered since new.

Well another Frustrating day with my dealer!
They wanted to just replace the driveshaft flange, pinion nut and crush washer and call it a day! I said NO FREAKING WAY!

I asked them to disassemble my rear and find out what the cause is, why is oil running down the pinion gear and out the flange and nut???? Pinion seal is FINE!
Not only that but the oil in the diff has only been in there for 400kms and it looks like sludge! How long will the rear last like that? LOL
They agreed to disassemble, check tolerances and reassemble with new flange nut etc.. And I was told Dodge would replace the entire rear if it leaks upon return to me?!
Sounds fair, I just hope they get it fixed this time cause I really like this truck!

I'll update again once I have my truck back for now I'm driving a PT Crusier rental which sure doesn't have a hemi

Frustrating, I know,,,
It sounds like they are trying to 'resolve' it, but about all you can do at this point is hope they get it RIGHT ASAP!
Keep us posted!!!

that is so true about fluid on gas tank. I just noticed a leak under my universal joint and fluid on the tank. after further research it was the pinion seal.
